However, finding the right sport utility vehicle can be daunting, especially when you have a budget to stick to. The highest rated SUVs under $50,000 on this list come from Honda, Toyota, and Lexus.

One of the highest rated SUVs under $50,000 is the Honda Passport

Not all SUVs are created equal, and Edmunds thought the 2023 Honda Passport was one of the more impressive options. Honda equipped the 2023 Passport with a powerful V6 engine and a comfortable interior. It has room for five passengers and gets 19 mpg in the city and 24 mpg on the highway. All-wheel drive is included on every trim level, something much of the competition charges extra for.

Some safety systems on the 2023 Passport include Collision Mitigation Braking System and the Lane Keeping Assist System. Honda’s Road Departure Mitigation System can also help automatically steer the Passport back into the lane.

The National Highway Transportation Safety Administration gave the Honda Passport a five-star overall safety rating. It also received high marks from the Insurance Institute of Highway Safety on most crashworthiness tests.

Kia’s three-row Telluride is one of the highest rated SUVs under $50,000

No matter where you look, the 2023 Kia Telluride is one of the highest-rated SUVs on the market this year. The Telluride has comfortable seating for seven or eight passengers and plenty of room in the cargo area. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard, and plenty of USB plugs keep the whole family charged.

Kia has many helpful safety features on the Telluride this year, such as Blind-Spot View Monitor and Safe Exit Assist. Some trim levels come with Highway Drive Assist 2, an advanced adaptive cruise control system helpful in traffic.

The National Highway Transportation Safety Administration did not give the 2023 Kia Telluride an overall rating yet, but it earned high scores on the performed tests. While the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety hasn’t thoroughly tested the new version yet, it received the Top Safety Pick award in 2022.

For those who want a luxury option within budget Lexus NX 350

For those looking for the highest rated SUVs under $50,000 that offer a little luxury, the 2023 Lexus NX 350 checks all the boxes. Lexus knows a thing or two about luxury, and the NX delivers a comfortable and upscale cabin. Since it is on the smaller side, the NX 350 gets relatively good fuel economy.

Some of the best safety features on the NX 350 include Risk Avoidance Emergency Steer Assist and Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist. Lexus also has Dynamic Radar Cruise Control with Curve Speed Management that helps keep a safe distance between the SUV and other cars.

The Insurance Institute of Highway Safety gave the 2023 Lexus NX 350 high scores on its safety tests, but a full rating isn’t available yet. Same with scores from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, though the NX should receive a high rating like in previous years.
