It’s no secret that Honda cars are reliable, but reliability and safety don’t always go together. A car can have an abundance of advanced driver’s aids, but those aren’t 100% guaranteed to prevent collisions. That’s why you want a reliable car built tough enough to withstand heavy impacts, as well as escape mechanical defects and body issues for many years. 

Still, even some reliable cars lack the proper body integrity and headlight quality to earn good safety scores. Fortunately, these three Honda cars are dependable and some of the safest models you can buy for the 2022 model year.

1. Honda Accord

According to the IIHS, the Accord is a Top Safety Pick+ winner with great crash test scores, making it one of Honda’s safest cars. The only thing that might concern some drivers is the Accord’s below-average rating on the updated side test. There wasn’t enough head protection for the crash dummy, causing it to knock its head against the window with considerable force.

The Accord’s standard headlights also have more glare and offer less visibility than those of other models. The Accord LX only offers standard halogen high-beams, which are upgraded to LED high-beams on the Sport trim and above. Besides the LX, every other Accord also has standard fog lights.

If you need some extra peace of mind, each Accord has automatic emergency braking with forward collision warning. The Accord Sport is the first trim with blind-spot monitors, plus the option to upgrade the 192-hp turbo-four. The alternative is a 252-hp  turbo-four that swaps out the CVT for a ten-speed automatic transmission. 

This engine was discontinued for the redesigned 2023 Accord. That model hasn’t been tested by the IIHS yet, but we do know that several of its safety tech features received improvements.

2. Honda Civic

Both the Honda Civic sedan and hatchback are Top Safety Pick+ winners, boasting perfect scores in almost every testing regimen. It fared better in the updated side test than the Accord and the IIHS had no complaints about this sedan’s low-beam headlights.

The Civic received a complete redesign for this model year with a new exterior and some minor powertrain enhancements. The standard engine is a 158-hp four-cylinder, but higher trims have a 180-hp turbo-four. Car and Driver was pleased with the Civic’s handling, but noted that the turbocharged engine was slower than expected.

As part of the Civic’s redesign, the hatchback has even more legroom than the outgoing model. The Honda Civic hatchback also has a split-folding second row and over 24 cu-ft of cargo space. The Civic sedan has optional split-folding rear seats and nearly 15 cu-ft of trunk space.

The 2022 Civic actually has more standard safety features than the 2022 Accord, such as a rear-seat reminder and traffic sign recognition. The Civic received a slightly lower frontal crash rating from the NHTSA, but it still has the best possible overall score.

3. Honda Insight

The IIHS had no major complaints about the Honda Insight’s crashworthiness. Out of Honda’s three Top Safety Pick+ winners, the Insight’s child-seat anchors are the easiest to locate and use. The Insight’s second row is also suitable for adults and it offers more trunk space than most hybrid sedans.

The Insight’s powertrain consists of a four-cylinder engine and one electric motor generating 151 hp combined. Car and Driver was pleased with its performance overall, highlighting its strong brakes and smooth transitions between electric and gas power.

The Insight also promises excellent gas mileage, up to 52 mpg combined. The base EX trim includes almost every available advanced safety feature. Since 2022 was the Insight’s last model year, you could get one of Honda’s safest cars at a heavily discounted price.
