When you think about motorcycles, the first ones that usually come to mind are big street cruisers made by Harley-Davidson. These street bikes usually have powerful engines and top speeds of up to 140 miles per hour. Then there are sports bikes, which motorcyclists use to compete in races like the Superbike World Championship or the Supersport Championship.

These street-legal racing bikes, also known as “superbikes”, are motorcycles that have an engine with a displacement of above 600cc. Some of the more powerful bikes on the market even have engine displacements in the 1000cc range. If you think you’re ready to handle some next-level motorcycle power, here are three of the most powerful superbikes you can buy.

Kawasaki Ninja H2

In order to accommodate the supercharged engines on racing bikes, the chassis must be powerful and made of high-quality materials. The Ninja H2’s frame is a powerful steel trellis with aluminum side plates. While these materials are heavy, it has the excellent handling power needed to win races. It features a 6-speed transmission that is easily accessible and highly receptive to the driver.

Kawasaki’s Ninja models are well-known for being some of the fastest motorcycles ever made. The Ninja H2 has a top speed record of 209 miles per hour, with an acceleration rate of 0 to 60 in just 2.6 seconds. It has an engine displacement of 998cc with an rpm of 11,000.

For 2019, a few extra upgrades were added to enhance the Ninja’s power even more. These included a new exhaust system to help increase torque, updated plugs and air filters, and a stronger top coat of paint meant to withstand small scrapes and harsh weather conditions.

BMW S1000RR

This sportbike was originally only produced to race in the 2009 Superbike World Championship but was later released to the public after considerable demand from consumers. The S1000RR is specifically designed for racing with pilot footpegs, unsymmetric headlights, control bars, and wider cowling that provides increased airflow to the engine.

It’s built on an aluminum bridge frame and features a highly adjustable front and rear suspension. It’s also one of the lightest superbikes on the market.

Its engine is equally as impressive as the bike’s exterior design. It’s an inline 4-cylinder,  liquid-cooled, and has a displacement of 999cc. This makes it capable of 204 hp and 83 lb-ft of torque at 11,000 rpm.

For 2019, the manufacturer added a ShiftCam feature to the bike to increase its torque output, along with many other standard driver safety features. These included ABS, shift assistance, and traction control. The S1000RR also has four driving modes (Race, Road, Rain, and Dynamic) to help drivers tackle all road conditions.

Yamaha YZF-R1

The YZF-R1’s construction varies slightly from most standard racing bikes. Yamaha uses a  “stacked gearbox” design for this model. The engine length is not as long, which means better handling because of an improved center of gravity.

Its body is made of carbon fiber that is both strong and lightweight. It also comes with an Electronic Riding Suspension system, which tracks the driver’s racing behavior and adjusts the dampers accordingly. Its unified brake system makes it one of the safest bike on the market, which is an important consideration when going at speeds of nearly 200 miles per hour.

The engine is a 4-cylinder inline with a displacement of 998cc. This gives it a power output of 190 hp and 73.2 lb-ft of torque. It can also be purchased with an upgraded electronics package with improved slide control, traction control, anti-lock brakes, and an anti-wheelie control system.
