3 Jeeps With Convertible Tops
One of the most common stereotypes in the car world is that a convertible car is either a sports car or a roadster, and there is some truth to that notion. Porsche 911 and Mazda Miata models are some of the most common convertibles, and they’re both sports cars, but this doesn’t mean that all convertibles have to be sporty. In fact, Jeep has three models that are either convertibles or have a removable top, and here’s a look at them.
1. The Jeep Wrangler (2-door) and the Wrangler Unlimited (4-door)
The Wrangler is perhaps the most popular car from Jeep, so it’s not surprising that the automaker has many customization options. The best option for folks who want a true convertible Jeep is the company’s Sky One-Touch Power Top option. As the name implies, this option adds a soft top roof to the Wrangler that can be retracted with the touch of a button.
That being said, the Sky One-Touch Power Top is also the Wrangler’s most expensive option. It’s only available on the Wrangler’s top trims, and the option costs over $4,000. Jeep does offer other convertible top options, though they won’t be powered. The cheapest options are soft tops, which cost about $700. Owners will have to retract the awning manually.
Then there are the hardtop options, and these are more expensive. It depends on the color choices, but the three-piece hardtop option starts at around $1,900 and can cost upwards of $2,900. Although the panels are sturdier than the soft top option, they’re lightweight panels, allowing drivers to retract them easily.
Finally, there’s the Sunrider for hardtops add-on option. As the name suggests, shoppers must pay for the hardtop option before they can add the Sunrider to it. The Sunrider is a hybrid between a hardtop and a soft top, as the portion above the first row of seats is easily retractable. This allows owners to get the sturdiness of a hardtop while having the flexibility of easily opening their top.
2. The Jeep Gladiator is a pickup truck based on the Wrangler
Since the Jeep Gladiator was built based on the Wrangler, it’s not surprising that the automaker offers similar convertible top options for the truck. Just like with the Wrangler, Jeep offers a soft top, a three-piece hardtop, and the Sunrider for a hardtop option. The prices for these convertible top options are also the same as those on the Wrangler.
The main difference between the two, as far as their tops go, is that Jeep doesn’t offer the Sky One-Touch Power Top option for the Gladiator. As such, owners who want to retract their Gladiator tops will have to do it manually all the time.
3. The Jeep Wrangler 4xe is the plug-in hybrid version of the Wrangler
The 4xe is the PHEV (plug-in hybrid electric vehicle) version of the Jeep Wrangler, starting at about $55,000. For comparison, the regular Wrangler starts at just over $31,000. That makes the Wrangler 4xe about $14,000 more expensive than the Wrangler. Once again, though, its convertible top options are almost identical to the Jeep Wrangler. Jeep offers a soft top option, a three-piece hardtop option, the Sunrider option, and, importantly, the Sky One-Touch Power Top option as well.
Overall, the prices for those convertible tops are about the same as on the Wrangler. The main difference comes from the Dual-Top Group option. This option gives owners both a three-piece hardtop and a soft top. It costs about $2,500 on the Wrangler, but it goes for $3,700 on the Wrangler 4xe.
