These large SUVs cost over $100 to fill up with gas, and none of the options get over 16 mpg overall. Which sport utility vehicles are going to drain your wallet?

The 2022 Ford Expedition has the honor of being first on the list of large SUVs from Consumer Reports. It is also first on the list of most expensive sport utility vehicles to fill up with gas. The Expedition has a 28.3-gallon gas tank capacity, which makes it a good vehicle for long trips. At 453 miles on a tank, you wouldn’t have to stop too often. However, this large Ford SUV returned 16 mpg overall during testing. It managed to get 23 mpg on the highway, but that still isn’t great fuel economy. Based on the $4.85 fuel number, that would cost $137 to fill up.
Consumer Reports gave the large SUV above-average scores on the road test and owner satisfaction areas. The reliability was just average.

The 2022 Chevy Suburban came in second on the list of expensive large SUVs to fill up with gas. The Suburban returned 16 mpg overall during testing, which equated to 22 mpg on the highway. Coming in fourth on the list of large SUVs, the Chevy Suburban has a 28-gallon gas tank. That offers 448 miles of range on a full tank and would equate to $136 for a full tank.
Consumer Reports didn’t give the Suburban great marks for reliability. The road test and owner satisfaction were better, though. This also applies to the GMC Yukon XL, which is its mechanical twin.

The Toyota Sequoia is a large SUV that costs over $100 to fill up
Check out the 2022 Toyota Sequoia large SUV. It only gets 15 mpg overall and 21 mpg on the highway, which is lower than the other two options. Plus, the Toyota SUV only returned 10 mpg during city testing. It did manage to get second place on the list of large SUVs from Consumer Reports. With a 26.4-gallon gas tank and 396 of range on a single tank, the Toyota Sequoia cost $128 to fill up.
The Sequoia SUV received high marks for the predicted reliability and predicted owner satisfaction. It was just average on the road test, but large sport utility vehicles aren’t known for being nimble.

There are still some reliable options on this list, but filling up at the gas station might be painful. Not all large SUVs are created equal, but sometimes it is a necessity for large groups. Consumer Reports suggests that a gas card from a place like Costco, Sam’s Club, or BJ’s Warehouse might help with savings.
