3 Least Desirable EVs of 2022
Electric vehicles are slowly taking over the automotive industry. Eventually, close to half of the vehicles produced in the United States will be electric vehicles. This means that automakers will produce plenty of best-selling models and some duds as well. Some EVs aren’t competitive, and others are downright undesirable. Factors like range, price, and practicality all contribute to whether or not consumers will consider buying an electric car, truck, or SUV. Here are some of the least desirable EVs of 2022.
The 2022 Mazda MX-30’s driving range is low
Electrek claims that Mazda sold less than 10 MX-30 units in July. How could the Japanese automaker possibly sell so few units?
The Mazda MX-30 is selling poorly because of its low driving range. The electric subcompact SUV only gets 100 miles of driving range. This is hardly ideal for drivers with long commutes that wish to travel long distances on weekends. The average driving range for electric subcompact SUVs is between 200 and 250 miles of range. The MX-30 has to be charged at least twice as often as competitors like the Hyundai Kona Electric and Chevy Bolt EUV.
To make matters worse, the MX-30 isn’t exceptionally affordable. It starts at $33,470. After the federal electric vehicle tax credit, the Mazda MX-30’s price is closer to $25,970. The electric subcompact SUV doesn’t offer enough value at that price because of its measly 100-mile driving range. It’s one of the least desirable EVs of the year because competitors offer much more driving range.
The Tesla Model X is expensive and unreliable
The Tesla Model X is easily one of the most expensive electric vehicles on the market today. Tesla’s first electric models were luxury models that focused on performance. The Tesla Model 3 and Model Y were affordable for a brief period of time, but supply chain issues caused price hikes.
The Model X starts at a whopping $120,990. Its starting price makes it unattainable for most average American consumers. The electric SUV model boasts impressive performance specs, but its reliability issues make it undesirable. The 2022 Model X got a terrible predicted reliability rating from Consumer Reports. It also got a poor score for value. The 2023 BMW IX M60 starts at $108,900 and seems to offer more value than the Tesla Model X.
The Nissan Leaf can’t keep up with competitors
The Nissan Leaf was one of the first electric vehicles to hit the American market, yet it isn’t a best-selling EV. Despite being around for longer than many of its rivals, the Leaf can’t compete with the specs or sales numbers of newer nameplates. Models that are three times more expensive than the electric hatchback outsell it.
The Leaf has affordability on its side, but value is another story. The 2023 Nissan Leaf starts at $27,800. It makes 147 horsepower and can travel for only 149 miles of range. The Leaf is one of the least desirable EVs because it is underpowered, and its range doesn’t help drivers who get range anxiety. There are plenty of great affordable electric vehicles on the market that provide adequate driving range, excellent standard features, and decent value for the money.
