Some may not know that Chevy still offers the 2.8-liter I-4 LWN Duramax turbodiesel engine in the 2022 Colorado. But not for long. Chevy has announced the end of the line for the venerable diesel is the first week of July. The 2023 Colorado will only be available with the turbocharged 2.7-liter I-4 L3B gas engine. 

When will Chevy build the last 2022 diesel Chevy Colorados?

Chevy’s Wentzville, Missouri, assembly plant has been directed to build diesel models of the company’s midsize pickup from July 4 to July 8. After that week, Chevy will no longer make a diesel-powered Colorado truck, according to GM Authority. The 2022 Colorado truck production will continue for only another month before it is reconfigured for the all-new 2023 truck. 

While the next Colorado will carry over the current truck’s 31XX platform, it is highly revised. One big improvement is incorporating the GM Global B electrical architecture. This means it can now receive over-the-air updates and will feature advanced tech features. 

What engine options will the 2023 Chevy Colorado have?

The L3B I4 engine from the Chevy Silverado 1500 will find double duty in the 2023 Colorado. In the Silverado, it pumps out 310 hp and 430 lb-ft of torque. It will also ditch the diesel’s six-speed automatic in favor of the new GM 10-speed transmission. Chevy dropped the manual transmission option in 2019. Combined, this is a vast improvement over the diesel’s 181 hp and 369 lb-ft of torque. 

And, of course, the 2023 GMC Canyon will also see all of these same changes as it is essentially the same as the Colorado, and built on the same Wentzville line. There is a lot more we know about the two trucks.

Starting in the front, slim LED headlights stretch across the top of the fascia, with trim tying them together. It is integrated better than the current truck, with the scattershot details toned down. You can see it utilizes the same basic body structure from the side DLO. Square wheel openings are gone, replaced by round styling which, really, makes it look like many other midsize trucks. Oh, well.

2023 Colorado ZR2s testing in heavy camo gives some hints

The 12-spoke wheels are 18-inch alloy units. Interiors will have upgraded materials and features after it learned its lesson cheapening out on the 2019 Silverado cabin. The 2022 Silverado received a new cabin. Trims will include the LT, ZR2 Package, and Premier. The W/T work truck will be the base Colorado truck. Seen in heavy camouflage with ZR2 trim, 33-inch tires, Multimatic DSSV shocks, and a front skid plate have been spied. 

With production starting in August, the 2023 Colorado should be available from dealerships in September. We’re anxious to see if the long time Chevy has stuck with the current-gen means it has spent that time making sure it is a worthy competitor for the rush of all-new midsize trucks also coming in 2023. It will be a big year for this popular truck segment.
