Kelley Blue Book added the 2022 Subaru Forester to its list of lowest five-year cost-to-own SUVs list. In the compact SUV category, the Forester has a five-year cost-to-own price of around $39,473. That’s a savings of $1,957 compared to the segment average. Kelley Blue Book considered the cost of fuel, maintenance, insurance, state taxes/registration, and depreciation when making this list of Subaru SUVs.

What does the Forester SUV have to offer buyers? It has plenty of room, high safety scores, and decent fuel economy. Important diver assistant features like forward collision warning (FCW), lane departure warning (LDW), and automatic emergency braking (AEB) are standard. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) gave the 2022 Forester a Top Safety Pick Plus award.

Starting MSRP: $25,195

Don’t forget the Outback is another Subaru SUV that won’t cost a lot to own

The 2022 Subaru Outback is considered a midsize SUV. Kelley Blue Book put the five-year cost-to-own is only $43,973. That’s $6,730 below the segment average, making the Outback a smart buy. This Subaru sport utility vehicle comes with all-wheel drive standard, which is usually an expensive option from other automakers.

The IIHS also gave the 2022 Outback a Top Safety Pick Plus award for this year. On most of the crashworthiness tests for the driver, side, rear, and roof crash tests, the sport utility vehicle received top scores. Kelley Blue Book says that the Outback also delivers on resale value. What’s not to like?

The Subaru Ascent sport utility vehicle checks all the boxes

For three-row midsize SUVs, the 2022 Subaru Ascent was one of the Subarus that won’t cost a lot to own. The five-year cost to own for the 2022 Ascent came to $48,383. That’s $4,212 below the segment average. FCW, LDW, and AEB are standard safety systems included. This Subaru sport utility vehicle can tow 2,000 pounds with the base model, which goes up to about 5,000 with higher trim levels.

From the IIHS, the Ascent received the Top Safety Pick Plus award. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) gave the Subaru SUV five stars on all but one crashworthiness test.

When it comes down to it, Subaru SUVs have a lot to offer buyers. Subaru looks like your best bet if you are looking for a safe vehicle that doesn’t cost a lot to own but also has a high resale value. The Forester, Outback, and Ascent have approval from the IIHS, NHTSA, and Kelley Blue Book.
