Three PHEV SUVs with 35 miles of range for under $50,000 

First of all, what is a PHEV? It’s a Plug-in hybrid vehicle. This means that it can be powered by both electricity and gas. 

It can run on gas or electricity alone. Plus, it can combine electric and gas power to improve your fuel economy. You can plug PHEV SUVs in to charge but the regenerative braking also returns energy to the battery pack. 

1. 2025 Ford Escape PHEV 

The 2025 Ford Escape PHEV rolls in with a starting price of $38,400. It’s equipped with a 2.5-liter inline-four engine that’s paired with an electric motor to generate 210 hp and 155 lb-ft of torque. 

Plus, It gets an EPA-estimated electric range of 37 miles on a single charge. With electric power and gas, the Escape PHEV provides an impressive 101 MPGe. 

With only gas, it gets about 42 mpg in the city and up to 36 mpg on the highway. It can travel about 520 miles between fill-ups. 

2. 2025 Kia Sportage PHEV 

The 2025 Kia Sportage PHEV starts at $41,065. It pairs a 1.6-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine with an electric motor and a battery pack to provide 261 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque. 

Also, with the Sportage PHEV, you get an EPA-estimated electric range of 35 miles. Plus, it gets about 84 MPGe with gas and electric power.

When the charge runs out, it gets about 35 mpg combined. It can travel about 426.9 miles between fill-ups. 

3. 2025 Toyota RAV4 PHEV 

The 2025 Toyota RAV4 PHEV completes this list of the best PHEV SUVs. It starts at $43,865. It’s equipped with a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine that’s paired with two electric motors and a battery pack to crank out 302 hp. 

Plus, it has an EPA-estimated electric range of 42 miles. It gets about 94 MPGe with gas and electric power combined. 

When the charge runs out it gets about 40 mpg in the city and up to 36 mpg on the highway. It can travel about 600 miles between fill-ups.
