The 2022 Ford F-150’s PowerBoost hybrid powertrain is better

The F-150 hybrid produces 430 horsepower and 570 pound-feet of torque, which is actually less than that of the Tundra i-Force Max hybrid engine. Whenever the Tundra is traveling more than 18 mph, the gas engine is always running. The Ford F-150 can go into full EV mode while moving as quickly as 50 mph. Ford’s 1.5-kWh lithium-ion battery is located under the bed of the truck, while Toyota’s nickel-metal hydride battery is under the rear seat. We’ve yet to see it in action but can safely assume it will impact interior space in some way. Whether for cargo or passengers, the battery location for the F-150 is certainly more convenient.

The F-150 can tow and haul more weight

The Ford F-150 is capable of towing up to 14,000 pounds and has a payload capacity of up to 3,270 depending on the engine and cabin/bed combination. The Toyota Tundra TRD Pro, the performance and offroad trim level and most expensive Tundra, has a maximum payload of 1,940 pounds and can tow as much as 12,000 pounds. Ford’s F-150 continues to lead in this category for yet another year, though Toyota did step it up for 2022. The redesigned Tundra took leaps forward in this and many other areas, and will likely continue to do so going forward.

The 2021 Ford F-150 hybrid has a towing range of between 11,000 and 12,700 pounds, which is impressive for a hybrid engine. We expect the 2022 version will have very similar, if not exactly the same, numbers. The standard V6 gas engine is required to reach the F-150’s maximum towing and payload capacities.

It’s electric, boogie woogie

The third and final reason the 2022 Ford F-150 is better than the Toyota Tundra is that there is a fully electric version. The Ford F-150 Lightning releases for the 2022 model year and looks incredible. It uses this information to keep you informed about your usage, power and estimated driving range. The F-150 Lightning also offers BlueCruise, the hands-free driving technology. Cameras and radars allow drivers to let the truck take over on prequalified sections of highways. Best of all the Ford F-150 Lightning is affordable, starting at just $39,974; which is only roughly $5,000 more than the Toyota Tundra starting price.

The Ford F-150 has been the best-selling truck in America for 44 years. That type of achievement doesn’t happen by accident. The 2022 Toyota Tundra has taken tremendous strides with its redesign and a new generation. It’s coming close to competing with the likes of Ford, Ram, and Chevrolet for the top pickup truck spot.
