3 Reasons to Buy a 2022 Ford Mustang Mach-E, Not a Hyundai Ioniq 5
Competition is fierce among automakers adding EVs to their product lines. The 2022 Hyundai Ioniq 5 is a solid choice among electric SUVs, but the 2022 Ford Mustang Mach-E is a much better option.
As a performance-tailored all-electric crossover, the 2022 Ford Mustang Mach-E is one of the best choices in a growing field of EVs. Here are three reasons why you should buy a Mustang Mach-E, not a Hyundai Ioniq 5.
1. The 2022 Ford Mustang Mach-E offers more bang for your buck
Consumer Reports ranks the 2022 Ford Mustang Mach-E at the top of the luxury compact SUV class, with a slightly higher overall score than the 2022 Hyundai Ioniq 5.
The four-door SUVs received similar scores, but the Mustang Mach-E excels with perfect scores for routine handling, acceleration, and owner satisfaction. It also outranks the Ioniq 5 as an IIHS Top Safety Pick, and certain Mach-E trims earned the highest honor of Top Safety Pick+.
Both EVs are eligible for a federal tax credit of up to $7,500. The starting price for the 2022 Ford Mustang Mach-E is $43,895 before the tax credit, while the starting MSRP for the 2022 Hyundai Ioniq 5 is $44,000.
With such a slight price difference, the overall upfront cost of the vehicle becomes a non-determining factor when it comes to selecting the best model. Price aside, the Mustang Mach-E offers a far better value.
2. The 2022 Ford Mustang Mach-E boasts more horsepower and torque
The 2022 Ford Mustang Mach-E wins hands down over the Hyundai Ioniq 5 when it comes to performance. The Mach-E harnesses 266 hp and 317 lb-ft of torque, while the Ioniq 5 lags behind at 225 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque.
The Mach-E is a leader in its competitive class. The EV can hit 0 to 60 mph in 5.2 seconds, with an EPA-estimated extended range of 270 miles, using 37 kWh of battery energy every 100 miles. A bonus to the expansive range includes zero tailpipe emissions.
The Mach-E “delivers the agility you’d expect of anything wearing a Mustang badge,” Edmunds says. “Ford tuned the handling dynamics to make even this all-wheel-drive SUV feel more like a rear-wheel-drive sports sedan. Around turns, it’s playful and engaging.”
CNET Roadshow reports the 2022 Mustang Mach-E GT uses an 88-kWh battery with a front motor setup that generates an astounding 480 hp and 600 lb-ft of torque, hitting 60 mph in 3.8 seconds. The Performance edition of the GT trim also produces 480 ponies but adds another 34 lb-ft of torque, for a total of 634 lb-ft. This model zooms from 0 to 60 mph in only 3.5 seconds.
3. The Ford also provides more cargo capacity
Hyundai lists the specs on the 2022 Hyundai Ioniq 5 as 27.2 cubic feet of cargo capacity with the rear seats up and 59.3 cubic feet with the rear seats folded down. The virtually nonexistent “frunk” provides only 0.85 cubic feet of space, giving the Ioniq 5 a total cargo capacity of 60.2 cubic feet.
Consumer Reports gives the 2022 Hyundai Ioniq 5 a low score for its trunk and cargo area, noting the “limiting space factor being the rear wheel wells that encroach the cabin area.” CR testers were also unimpressed by the lack of a frunk in the Ioniq EV.
Meanwhile, the 2022 Mustang Mach-E offers a generous 64.4 cubic feet of cargo capacity. U.S. News reports, “There’s 29.7 cubic feet of cargo space behind the rear seats and 59.7 cubic feet with the rear seats folded, which is more than enough room for stowing luggage and bulk items like a bike.”
Consumer Reports gives the Mach-E a better rating than the Ioniq for trunk space and says the “Mach-E’s rear cargo area is wide and useful.” CR adds, “Dropping the dual-level cargo floor down to its lower position makes it possible to carry taller items.” It even includes a useful 4.7 cubic foot frunk space.
