The Jeep Wrangler is a staple in the American car market. The Wrangler model has been around since 1987, but it’s really been around a lot longer than that. From WWII forward, the Jeep has dominated the American off-road SUV scene despite being an objectively terrible road car. Somehow, through all the negative reviews, the Wrangler remains one of our favorite things on four wheels. And it is in that spirit that we offer you three reasons to get a 2023 Jeep Wrangler despite every review you’ve ever read.

The 2023 Jeep Wrangler is still a beast off-road

More than any other off-roading platform on the market today, the 2023 Jeep Wrangler embodies the spirit of off-roading. But it’s not just spirit the Wrangler’s got; it also has the chops to back it up. 

One of the major critiques plaguing the 2023 Wrangler is its silly price tag. However, all those options aren’t just for looks. Last year Jeep released the Xtreme Recon package, which, when paired with the Rubicon trim, makes for the most capable factory off-roader the marque has ever made. According to MotorTrend, this package includes 35-inch 315-section BF Goodrich K02 All-Terrain tires, unique 18-inch beadlock-capable wheels, a 1.5-inch lift, an ultra-short 4.88:1 axle ratio option, a reinforced swing gate, and upgraded brakes. This, together with the already proven platform, is one hell of an off-roader. 

The 2023 Jeep Wrangler still has a manual transmission

Admittedly, this might feel like a strange reason to buy a vehicle, but manual transmissions are fading fast. With more nameplates dropping the third pedal every year, the shrinking list of vehicles that offer it is becoming more appealing. 

I put my money where my mouth is. When I bought by 2000 Jeep Wrangler TJ, I refused to buy an automatic. I waited until I found the right one with a 5-speed. There is something “right” about shifting the gears yourself in Jeep. The brand understands this. 

Subjectivity aside, if you plan to wheel your Jeep Wrangler, many off-roaders prefer a manual box to an automatic one because you can more accurately control the power output with the clutch. 

Nothing is as customizable as a Jeep

A major part of the appeal of a Jeep Wrangler is that nearly every single piece can be upgraded, downgraded, changed, reversed, or whatever the hell else your heart desires. Jeeps are Lego cars. While performance upgrades are a major part of the market, more recently, many Jeep owners have taken to strictly aesthetic mods. 

In a world where cars are getting more and more uniform by the day, the Jeep Wrangler is actively spitting in the face (or maybe something slightly less aggressive) of that conformity. On top of all that customization, Jeeps also still come in a variety of fun colors. You’re not stuck with just a white, black, or silver one. 

You should consider buying a Jeep

If you found this list of reasons to buy a 2023 Jeep Wrangler a bit subjective, well, that’s because it mostly is. Jeeps are for the subject. That’s what they do. They serve the buyer and the buyer only. Wranglers aren’t overly practical, roomy, reliable, or comfortable. Those things go to serve other people. The Wrangler, even in its many forms today, is meant to give drivers a sense of possibility and purpose. They are meant to answer the question, “Hey, do you think we can get over there?” I love that about Wranglers, and if that’s appealing to you, then you don’t need any other reason to get one.
