Tesla is one of the most popular automakers worldwide. When someone thinks of electric vehicles, they instantly think of Tesla. However, in 2022, there are loads of reasons not to buy a vehicle from this electric titan. Tesla did a lot of things well and a lot of things first. Consequently, every other automaker wants to beat them at their own game. Here are three reasons not to buy a Tesla in 2022.
A reason not to buy a Tesla in 2022 is they’re too expensive
As of 2022, after multiple price changes, the cheapest Tesla model costs $46,440. The Model 3 is an excellent four-door sedan but is it worth that price for the Standard Range Plus model, which comes with rear-wheel drive. That’s a much higher price than you’d pay for other “affordable” sedans, like the Toyota Camry or Nissan Altima. If you want something more significant than a sedan, those prices will only worsen.
On top of the much more expensive Model S, the Model Y crossover starts at nearly $60,000, and the only SUV, Tesla Model X, begins north of six figures. To say the average person can’t afford to buy a Tesla would be a massive understatement. While some Tesla features are excellent, the brand doesn’t do anything to make it worth significantly more than all competition.
Software updates don’t fix hardware
One of the best things introduced by Tesla is software updates. The automaker can fix things within the vehicle without owners ever entering the confines of a dealership. Additionally, when new features are ready, Tesla can release them through a software update. However, that’s not possible with the hardware in and around the vehicle.
According to HotCars, upgrading hardware can be done manually but is tedious and expensive. As a result, you eventually end up with outdated hardware running the most up-to-date software. That makes some things completely unusable, laggy, or very inefficient. HotCars gave the example of AutoPilot, dual-monitor, and blind-spot monitoring, which Tesla released in an update, and users with outdated hardware can’t use them.
A reason not to buy a Tesla in 2022: Competition
Up until the last few years, Tesla hasn’t had much competition. The electric-only automaker has been primarily free of going up against gas-powered brands. However, that’s changing now, more quickly than most people realize. In the next few years, popular automotive titans like Ford, Subaru, Toyota, Nissan, Chevy, Ram, and many more are releasing electric vehicles. Other electric-only companies like Rivian, Fisker, and more are coming for Elon Musk’s brand.
In short, other automakers are making better, more affordable electric options than Tesla. Some are available on the market already, but many more are on the way over the coming years. In the electric crossover competition, the Ford Mustang Mach-E is already ahead of the Tesla Model Y. Rivian, Ford, Ram, Chevy, and GMC electric pickups are jumping out ahead of the Cybertruck before it’s even available. In conclusion, even if the Tesla competition isn’t better than Tesla, the automaker will be forced to improve in many ways (like price) if it wants to succeed.
Don’t buy a Tesla in 2022
The Tesla brand has suffered some setbacks in recent years. Between recalls, fires, poor build quality, and more, Tesla’s top-notch reputation has fallen off. Additionally, Tesla’s method of updating software starts to become a problem after a while when the hardware can’t run the software. Lastly, automakers will fill the 2020s with new electric models entering the market. Those interested in an EV should stay patient and wait for an affordable, excellent model. Those are the reasons not to buy a Tesla in 2022.
