The 2022 Nissan Titan is an excellent full-size pickup truck overall. However, compared to other models in its class, it falls short in a few different ways. A reason not to buy a 2022 Nissan Titan is its tow rating

There’s a lot a truck has to do in order to compete with rivals. The Silverado, Ram 1500, and F-150 lead the way every year for the full-size pickup segment. If a competitor can’t keep up with those models in just about every facet, they will fall behind. For 2022, that’s part of the reason those trucks and others are better options than the Nissan Titan.

In short, the 2022 Nissan Titan can tow 9,660 pounds when appropriately equipped. In addition, its maximum payload capacity tops out at 1,711 pounds. The Japanese automaker’s full-size offering fails to challenge competitors for both measurements.

There’s only one Titan engine

Firstly, Nissan’s only available engine for the Titan is an excellent one. There’s nothing wrong with it, and it’s a tremendous full-size pickup motor. However, there aren’t any other options in the lineup, which is a problem. Competitors offer a plethora of engine choices, from hybrid to diesel, and the Titan only has one. If you’re buying a 2022 Nissan Titan, you’ll get a 5.6-liter V8, and you’ll like it.

Alternatively, the Titan starts at over $40,000, which we can’t help but think could be cheaper with a more affordable engine option. Other models with hybrids or V6 engines start around $10,000 cheaper than Nissan’s offering. According to Car and Driver, it “trades handling and ride quality for off-road ruggedness and potent hauling capacities…its steering and handling aren’t as refined as its competition.” The single Titan engine option makes 400 horsepower and 413 lb-ft of torque.

A reason not to buy the Nissan pickup is poor fuel economy

Another downside of having only one engine option is poor fuel economy. In a segment filled with hybrids and V6s, the V8 guzzles too much gas. In 2022, plenty of electric and hybrid pickup trucks are available (and coming soon) for those interested in saving cash at the pump. That leaves the Nissan Titan as the loan selection without an ounce of relief for fuel. According to Consumer Reports, the 2022 Nissan Titan gets 22 highway mpg, 11 city mpg, and a combined 16 mpg.

Based on the average driving distance in the US, CR reports that annual fuel costs will likely exceed $3,500. Fortunately, the punchy engine will take drivers from 0 to 60 in just 6.7 seconds. However, the Titan will often have to use that speed to find a gas station. With models like the F-150 Lightning and Tundra Hybrid available, thirsty trucks are easily avoided.

Is the 2022 Nissan Titan a good full-size pickup truck?

Overall, Nissan‘s full-size option is an excellent truck. It’s got something for everyone with a powerful engine, comfortable interior, and off-road options. However, there are a lot of drawbacks to choosing a Titan over other full-size models. In terms of towing and payload capacity, it’s dead last in the segment. Additionally, a lack of engine choices and poor fuel economy make the Titan expensive at the dealer and the gas station.
