The 2023 Volvo S90 luxury midsize sedan offers premium comfort and quality. Providing solid performance, it’s also one of the most reliable vehicles in its class. The S90 also rates consistently well among most auto reviewers, sitting comfortably in the middle of a crowded segment. Here are three reasons to take a closer look at the 2023 Volvo S90.

A fine luxury sedan

The four-door luxury sedan packs a turbocharged inline four-cylinder and eight-speed automatic transmission delivering 295 hp and 310 lb-ft of torque. The S90 can hit 0 to 60 mph in 6.2 seconds and has an EPA-estimated fuel economy of 23 mpg city/32 mpg highway. It starts at $57,000.

The Scandinavian automaker, known for its attention to safety, packs plenty of advanced driver-assistance features into the S90. It received good crash test ratings, earning a Top Safety Pick+ award from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).

The 2023 Volvo S90 is also available in a plug-in hybrid variant, starting at $70,500. The Volvo S90 Recharge delivers an impressive 455 hp and 523 lb-ft of torque and gets up to 66 MPGe in EV mode.

According to MotorTrend, the 2023 Volvo S90 “is a worthy alternative to some of the more obvious midsize luxury sedan choices if sportiness isn’t a top focus.”

3 reasons to like the 2023 Volvo S90

1. Elegant and stylish exterior design
2. Excellent use of upscale materials in the interior
3. Generous advanced driver-assistance technology

The 2023 Volvo S90 looks more expensive than it is, with a sleek exterior design that is elegant and eye-catching. It promises to turn heads with a distinctive style that’s arguably more appealing than rivals.

“The S90’s cabin is by far its most impressive feature,” Car and Driver reviewers say. It offers a balanced blend of upscale materials throughout, with genuine leather, open-pore wood, finely grained plastics, and brushed metal to create an “undeniably modern space.”

The Ultimate trim includes ventilated Nappa leather, a crystal gear selector, a tailored dashboard, ventilated front seats with four-way lumbar support and massaging features, adjustable rear power seats, a luxury armrest, and an upgraded Harman Kardon sound system.

The driver-assist technology is another reason to pay attention to the 2023 Volvo S90. Standard features include rear cross-traffic alert, blind-spot monitoring, adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, 360-degree surround view cameras, and front and rear automatic emergency braking.

3 drawbacks to the 2023 Volvo S90

1. Noisy cabin compared to other luxury sedans
2. Less-than-agile handling
3. Sluggish performance in the plug-in hybrid’s EV mode

Despite the praise for the 2023 Volvo S90, a few things might make you pause when considering this midsize luxury sedan. For example, the cabin tends to be noisier than other models in its class. MotorTrend attributes the annoying road noise issue to the vehicle’s 19-inch alloy wheels, larger than most competitors.

And though Volvo focused on luxury and comfort in the S90, it seems to have missed the mark in sportiness. Meant for daily commutes, not adventurous terrain, the 2023 Volvo S90 offers a gentle ride that meets the demands of routine driving. Though the handling is responsive, it isn’t very engaging. And the plug-in hybrid variant offers sluggish performance in EV mode.
