The 2022 Toyota Tundra hybrid engine makes more horsepower

For the 2022 model year, Toyota has completely ditched the 5.7-liter V8 engine that previously powered the Tundra. The only available engines are the standard twin-turbocharged 3.4-liter V6 and the i-Force Max V6 hybrid. The hybrid is directly competing with the Ford F-150 PowerBoost hybrid engine. The F-150’s PowerBoost produces 430 horsepower and 570 lb-ft of torque and has an EPA estimated range of 700 miles on a single tank of gas. The Toyota Tundra’s i-Force Max hybrid engine gives 437-horsepower and 583 lb-ft of torque, and the total mileage range on a tank of gas has not yet been made available.

For some, more horsepower is very important. Especially in a truck. Considering the TRD Pro version of the Tundra comes standard with the hybrid engine, going offroad can be a challenge. The TRD Pro is designed for offroad capability, and the extra horsepower it brings can prove useful in certain terrains and situations. The all-new Tundra’s hybrid engine aims to optimize the truck between mileage and capability.

A new suspension rig

A more significant new update to the redesigned 2022 Toyota Tundra is the coil-spring multilink setup in the rear, which replaces the dated leaf springs. This change provides more comfort and refinement to the truck, and though the truck is not yet available for testing, we can assume it increases the smoothness of the ride. The only other vehicle in its class to offer similar equipment is the Ram. The F-150 still uses leaf springs, though who knows how much longer that will last. Air springs on the rear axle and electronically controlled adaptive dampers are also available on the new Tundra for the first time, and the only other truck in the segment offering the same is the Chevrolet Silverado. A few modernizing enhancements to the new Tundra give it another leg up on the Ford F-150.

The 2022 Toyota Tundra has a bigger screen

Is bigger always better? We’d like to think so. The new Tundra comes standard with a 14.0-inch infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto capability. That’s a really big infotainment system to come standard in every single trim level of the 2022 Toyota Tundra. Compared to the Ford F-150, which has a 12.0-inch screen along with the Ram. The Chevrolet Silverado recently upgraded to a 13.4-inch screen, making it second to only the Tundra.

The Tundra can also get an optional 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, compared to the Ford F-150’s 12-inch. Though this one isn’t much of a difference, those inches add up. Bigger screens mean bigger on-screen buttons, and faster and easier navigating the menus while driving, which means safer driving.

There are plenty of ways in which each of the competitive full-size pickup trucks is better than one another. The new 2022 Toyota Tundra paled in comparison to the Ford F-150 for a long time. These recent updates thrust the Tundra back into the conversation as a top available option in this segment.
