Reasons to avoid the 2020 Ford F-150
2020 seemed to be a maintenance year for the Ford F-150. Not much changed for the 2020 model, making the 2019 option seem like a better deal. Plus, the 2021 Ford F-150 has incredible upgrades that you don’t want to miss out on.
We aren’t calling the 2020 Ford F-150 a bad truck at all, but you might do better with a different model in terms of savings and what’s included. The 2020 model begins around $28,745, and the price can quickly soar to over $80k, providing a range of options for buyers. But consider these reasons to avoid it first.
The Ford F-150 has a rough ride
According to CarAndDriver, the 2020 Ford F-150 isn’t as comfortable as the Ram 1500. Comfort is pretty darn important for a daily driver, too. During their testing, they discovered that the F-150 has a composed ride over smooth surfaces, but on uneven roads, bumps and jitters can be felt.
There is room for the steering and braking to be improved, according to Edmunds. However, it is easy to maneuver in and out of tight spaces in the city. The transmission provides smooth shifts, and the F-150 seems adequate as a daily driver and for vacations.
While the powerful V6 and V8 engines can provide a fast ride, they can be noisy. The Ford F-150 lacks air springs and adaptive shocks, so wind noise is noticeable at higher speeds. But on a positive note, the ride is very controlled while towing trailers.
The F-150 gets expensive, quickly
The base engine for the Ford F-150 is a 2.7-liter V6 engine with 325 hp and 400 lb-ft of torque. You can pay to upgrade to the 3.3-liter V6, 3.5-liter V6, or 5.0-liter V8 engine, which you will need for a better towing capacity.
With the 2.7-liter engine, you can tow up to 8,500 lb, which isn’t bad. But with the V8 engine, you can tow up to 13,000 lb. That also includes adding 4X4 for $3,425, and you’ll want to add the tow package for the integrated brake controller, sway control, and more.
The interior of the base model is noticeably cheap, with the use of hard plastics. But you can upgrade to higher trim models for a more luxurious feel. Spring for a model with an infotainment center. Be sure to add optional safety features that come standard on rivals too.
Also, the 2020 Ford F-150 is thirsty. It’s supposed to get an EPA estimated 21 mpg in the city and 28 mpg on the highway, but Edmunds discovered that it falls short of those numbers. It gets about four mpg less than advertised.
The 2021 Ford F-150 is a heck of an upgrade
