We’ve been driving tons of big trucks like the GMC Sierra 1500 and the Toyota Tundra. While the 2022 Toyota Tundra has been in the spotlight, the 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 deserves attention too. It has fresh upgrades that could make it the better option.

2022 GMC Sierra 1500 vs. 2022 Toyota Tundra 

We’ve spent a lot of time driving the 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 and the 2022 Toyota Tundra to learn their strengths and weaknesses. Form city driving, daily commuting, and off-roading both have a lot of things to consider. 

While the Tundra seems to be more popular because it has its first redesign in 15 years. But the Sierra also got refreshed features such as a new interior, suspension upgrades, modern tech, and enhanced off-roading capabilities. 

1. The 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 is more practical 

The 2022 GMC Sierra has more versatile features than the 2022 Toyota Tundra. It has more cargo space and storage. For example, there is a cubby above the glove box that the Tundra doesn’t have. 

Also, the rear seats fold flat against the wall to provide more storage with a flat cargo floor. The under-seat area in the Tundra is blocked, and there’s a hump in the middle of the floor. It’s more difficult for loading and storing cargo 

The Sierra has four engines available to suit various needs, including a rare diesel option. The Tundra only has two engines. 

Also, the Tundra’s i-FORCE MAX Hybrid setup doesn’t have the best fuel economy. We got about 15 mpg in most cases, and the Sierra got about 18.7 mpg. While both trucks are thirsty, we had higher hopes for the hybrid Tundra. 

The GMC Sierra is also easier to access. There are steps built into the bumper, and the multi-function tailgate has a built-in step and handle. With the Tundra, you can opt for a fold-out step, but it limits easy access to the bed to one side. 

2. The Sierra is more comfortable 

The 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 provides a more refined ride than the 2022 Toyota Tundra. While both trucks offer a smooth ride over the pavement, the Sierra absorbs impacts a little better. The Tundra is stiffer and rattles over larger bumps. 

The Tundra TRD Pro is surprisingly bumpy over dirt and gravel roads, while the Sierra maintains a comfortable ride quality. Also, the Sierra features less body roll and more passenger space in the rear. 

We’re very impressed by the Sierra’s turning radius. It’s easier to park and navigate through tight areas. 

Both trucks have a quiet interior at lower speeds. Wind and road noise is noticeable in the Tundra at highway speeds. Also, the hybrid engine is constantly droning. The sound is pipped into the Tundra’s cabin. 

3. The GMC Sierra 1500 has more tech 

The 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 feels a bit more advanced than the 2022 Toyota Tundra. But both trucks have massive touch screens, built-in navigation, wireless phone charging pads, and Wireless Apple CarPlay/Android Auto. 

The Sierra takes things a bit further with the SuperCruise hands-free driving tech that can adjust your speed, change lanes and keep you moving in stop-and-go traffic. Just keep your eyes on the road. 

Also, the Sierra has multiple camera views to make towing and hauling easier. You can look at the ground in front of your truck, in the bed, at the hitch, and surroundings. 

The adaptive suspension keeps the ride comfortable, and the digital rearview mirror enhances visibility. Plus, you can opt for tailgate speakers and the wireless Bluetooth system. 

The Toyota Tundra may be more reliable, but the Sierra is more comfortable, more convenient, and feels a little more modern.
