There are many excellent compact crossovers to choose from in 2020, but very few have the same notoriety as the 2020 Toyota RAV4 and the 2020 Subaru Forester. Both of these crossovers are versatile and relatively inexpensive to own. However, there are a few reasons why you should consider the Forester over the RAV4.

The 2020 Subaru Forester is a more comfortable ride

The RAV4 can accelerate a little faster than the Forester, but the Forester is the more comfortable ride between the two. The Forester shines for its smooth ride quality, secure handling, and exceptional fuel economy. This Subaru features a 182-horsepower 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine and stands out for its standard all-wheel-drive. 

Another significant advantage the Forester has is that even standard models are off-road ready. The Forester’s 8.7 inches of higher ground clearance makes maneuvering trails that much easier. It also has available off-road modes.

With the RAV4, you’d have to opt for the upper-level Adventure, and TRD Off-Road trims for standard AWD and off-road capability, which are pretty pricey. And while the RAV4 performs well overall, some drivers will be turned off by its noisy engine. Conversely, the Forester’s quietness and off-road capability make it a more compelling choice in the small crossover class.

The Forester’s infotainment system is more straightforward

Both the RAV4 and the Forester offer comfortable car cabins and desirable in-car technology. However, those with a minimalist sense of style will likely be drawn more to the Forester. The Forester’s simplistic interior design contributes to its overall serene feel. It’s also one of the most spacious options in its class and has plenty of head- and legroom. Oppositely, the RAV4 isn’t as generous on headspace.

Tech fans and technophobes will also appreciate the Forester’s straightforward approach to infotainment. The Forester’s infotainment display is built into its dash area. Standard features here on the Forester include a 6.5-inch touchscreen, Android Auto, and Apple CarPlay. The RAV4 also comes with many desirable infotainment offerings, but some buyers might find its display to be too flashy. 

The Forester has better ratings 

As we mentioned earlier, the RAV4 and Forester are among the most respected options in their class. Respected critics celebrate these two crossovers regarding safety, reliability, and affordability. That said, the Forester ranks slightly higher than RAV4 in a few critical categories.

According to Kelley Blue Book, the Forester is more affordable to own than the RAV4. KBB named this crossover as the winner of its 5-Year Cost to Own Award. The Forester’s predicted five-year cost to own is $35,3622. The RAV4 came in second place here with its predicted five-year costs at $37,219.  

Additionally, the Forester earned a higher safety rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. The IIHS named the Forester as a Top Safety Pick+, its highest honor, and gave the RAV4 its second-highest award as a Top Safety Pick. Furthermore, the Forester has higher owner satisfaction ratings than the RAV4, according to Consumer Reports.
