3 Reasons the Toyota Camry Is More Popular Than the Corolla This Year
Toyota is one of the most successful automakers in America right now, and unlike other popular automakers, such as Ford or Chevy, Toyota dominates in the sedan segment. Currently, the two most popular Toyota sedans in America are the Camry and the Corolla, but the Camry has the edge by a big margin.
Here’s a look at three reasons why the Toyota Camry is so much more popular than the Toyota Corolla this year.
Here’s how popular the Toyota Camry is compared to the Toyota Corolla
GoodCarBadCar has this year’s sales data up to July, and of the cars that there’s sales data for, the Camry is one of the best-selling vehicles in America right now. From January to July, Toyota has sold about 176,000 units of the Camry. This puts it in fourth place behind the Honda CR-V, but ahead of popular vehicles like the Toyota Tacoma.
The Corolla, meanwhile, is also selling well. The Japanese automaker sold about 119,000 units of the Corolla, and that makes it the seventh best-selling vehicle in America out of the cars that there’s sales data for. Both the Camry and the Corolla saw an increase in sales compared to last year, so that shows that the future is bright for Toyota’s sedans.
What’s interesting is that the Corolla is a much cheaper option than the Camry. According to Toyota, a 2023 Corolla starts at around $22,000, while a Camry from the same model year goes for over $26,000. As such, price probably isn’t the reason why the Camry is so much more popular than the Corolla, so here are other possible explanations.
1. The Toyota Camry is simply a more spacious vehicle
As many Americans know, size does matter. The Camry is a midsize sedan, while the Corolla is a compact one. That provides Camry owners with some inherent benefits compared to Corolla owners. This is mostly notable inside the car.
While the two Toyota sedans have about the same amount of front headroom and front legroom, the main difference is in their rear legroom. The Camry has 3 inches more, which is a significant amount.
It’s a similar story for cargo capacity. The Corolla has 13.1 cu-ft of space in its trunk, compared to the Camry’s 15.1 cu-ft. That extra cargo capacity can be a significant amount of space for many families.
2. Toyota gave the Camry a superior standard powertrain compared to the Corolla
Since the Camry is a larger vehicle, it naturally comes with a more powerful engine. On top of that, Toyota gave the Camry more powerful options too. The Camry starts with a 2.5-liter four-cylinder that gets 203 hp and 182 lb-ft of torque. That’s much more powerful than the Corolla’s standard 2.0-liter four-cylinder, which only makes 169 hp and 151 lb-ft of torque.
Toyota also offers a 3.5-liter turbo V6 that gets 301 hp and 267 lb-ft of torque. That’s about the same amount of power as the Corolla’s engine option, which is a 1.6-liter turbo three-cylinder that gets 300 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque.
3. There are currently more Camry options available than Corolla options
Car shoppers like to have options, and the Camry simply has more options available. There are 13 options available for the 2023 Camry, and that’s compared to the 12 options available for the Corolla. Both cars have hybrid options, and the Corolla has a hatchback option.
But the Camry has more top trim levels. On top of that, the 2024 Camry is currently available right now, while the 2024 version of the Corolla isn’t yet.
