Buying a 2023 Toyota Tacoma is something many people will consider this year. It’s one of the best-selling models in America year after year, and we don’t expect that to change anytime soon. However, for the 2023 model year, there are a few reasons to wait before buying one. None of the reasons to wait actually have anything to do with problems with the midsize truck. Here are three reasons to wait before buying a 2023 Toyota Tacoma.

1. Electric and hybrid Toyota Tacomas are coming

The first reason to wait before buying a 2023 Toyota Tacoma is to consider a hybrid or electric version in the future. As near as 2024, Car and Driver report the next-gen Tacoma will add an EV to its lineup. Estimated to start around $50,000, it could be the fuel-saving model you’ve been waiting for, or it could be so popular it’s easier (and cheaper) for you to get a non-electric Tacoma. Either way, the 2024 electric Tacoma is something worth waiting for.

In addition to an EV variant, a hybrid powertrain is set to enter the midsize truck’s lineup. The automaker has stated that it wants every model to have at least a hybrid powertrain option by the year 2025. As a result, a more fuel-economic version of the Tacoma is on the way. It might be worth the wait before buying a 2023 Toyota Tacoma.

2. An entry-level RAV4 truck is on the way

Next, if you’ve been paying attention to the pickup market, you’ve probably taken notice of the Ford Maverick’s popularity. As an affordable entry-level model, the Maverick has sold out just about every time dealers have restocked. Now, other automakers have taken notice, one of which is Toyota. If the Tacoma is to your liking but is just out of your price range, the new RAV4 truck might be the answer.

Although it will be tinier in size, we expect the new pickup to share a lot, like design, with the next-gen Tacoma. If it’s priced to compete with the Maverick, it will be on the lower end of the $20,000 mark to start, making it close to $10,000 cheaper than the base model Tacoma. Furthermore, we could see it use a version of the RAV4 Prime’s hybrid powertrain, likely offering some of the best pickup fuel economy available.

3. The 2023 Toyota Tacoma is due for an update

The final reason to wait before buying a 2023 Toyota Tacoma is to wait for an update. The outdated midsize truck is starting to show its age, having no redesign since 2016. To keep up with other pickups, Toyota is beginning a new generation. According to HotCars, the 2024 Toyota Tacoma will enter a new generation with a redesigned exterior and a more luxurious interior cabin. It’s expected to share many design cues with the recently redesigned Sequoia SUV and Tundra full-size truck.

That said, if you love the current Tacoma design, now is the time to buy. New versions of the popular model won’t look the same anymore. However, if you’re tired of seeing the same Tacoma that’s been around for nearly eight years, it might be smart to wait it out. That’s why the final reason to wait before buying a 2023 Toyota Tacoma is that it’s being redesigned in 2024.

Reasons to wait before buying a 2023 Toyota Tacoma

In conclusion, there are plenty of reasons to wait before buying a 2023 Toyota Tacoma. In the next year or so, we’ll see an electric and hybrid variant, a new RAV4 pickup truck that costs less, and the midsize truck will be redesigned. For those reasons, waiting to buy one means you’ll get a better, more fuel-efficient version in the future. However, if none of these reasons are important to you, there’s nothing wrong with the 2023 Toyota Tacoma, America’s best-selling midsize truck.
