Looking for a safe new SUV but don’t know where to begin? Here are some reliable midsize SUVs that are recommended by the experts at Edmunds. This list should get you started with some sport utility vehicles from Honda, Volkswagen, and Jeep.

The Honda Passport was the top pick for reliable midsize SUVs

Reliable midsize SUVs to seek out include this Honda Passport
The 2022 Honda Passport | Honda

When Edmunds rated some of the best midsize SUVs, the 2022 Honda Passport was the highest rated. Thanks to its versatility and reasonable price, it’s clear why the Passport is a good choice. A powerful V6 engine powers the SUV, and all-wheel drive is available.

Honda equipped the 2022 Passport SUV with forward collision warning, lane departure warning, and blind spot warning. Lane keep assist and lane centering assist are also standard safety features. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) gave the 2022 Honda Passport a five-star overall safety rating.

MSRP range: $38,370 – $45,930

Volkswagen’s Atlas Cross Sport is a good pick for reliable midsize SUVs

Edmunds found a lot of positives with the 2022 Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport. A spacious interior and comfortable cabin are noted by Edmunds, as is the easy-to-use infotainment system. Volkswagen’s Atlas Cross Sport offers a pleasant driving experience for a midsize SUV and is described as “surprisingly agile.”

The Atlas Cross Sport received a five-star safety rating from the NHTSA and many high scores from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). Blind-spot warning, lane-keeping assist, and a post-collision braking system are standard.

MSRP range: $33,635 – $50,805

The Jeep Grand Cherokee is off-road ready

Coming in third is the 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee. Regarding reliable midsize SUVs, the Grand Cherokee has plenty of powertrains to choose from. High tow numbers make it an even more well-rounded vehicle that is good both on-road and off-road.

Jeep equipped the 2022 Grand Cherokee with some safety features such as selec-terrain to help the SUV’s traction on the road. Quadra-life increases the Grand Cherokee’s ground clearance and uses an air suspension system to smooth out bumpy rides. Unfortunately, the Grand Cherokee has no safety scores from the IIHS or NHTSA.

MSRP range: $38,325 – $64,780

You can skip over the Nissan Murano

In Edmunds ratings, the 2022 Nissan Murano came in below average. While the Murano looks nice, the design makes visibility worse and harder to park. The 2022 Murano can tow, but nothing like others in the segment.

Edmunds says the 2022 Nissan Murano is slow, and for the price, some of its competition is a better buy. Nissan could improve the areas of technology, fuel economy, storage, and value. It also doesn’t have the longest history of reliability. The IIHS did give this Nissan SUV a Top Safety Pick Plus award.

MSRP range: $33,310 – $46,560

The list of reliable midsize SUVs isn’t long, but it is growing yearly. Reliability is more important than ever, with prices of used and new cars at record highs. Don’t be afraid to expand your search if you can’t find one of these options locally. Most dealerships can ship your new SUV for a small fee, so you don’t have to retrieve it.
