Subaru is known for its practical all-wheel-drive SUVs. Among its mainstays is the Outback midsize crossover. The 2023 version is attractively priced at around $30,000. However, shoppers on a tighter budget might want to consider a used model. Below are the most reliable Subaru Outback years under $10,000.

How reliable is the 2010 Subaru Outback? 

The first model year on our list is the 2010 Subaru Outback. U.S. News ranks the 2010 model third of 16 among 2010 Wagons and 15th of 93 used wagons under $20,000. In addition, the 2010 Outback has a “great” J.D. Power reliability rating of 82 out of 100. Though the 2010 Subaru Outback originally retailed for $22,995 to $30,995, U.S. News reports that consumers are paying an average of $7,946 to $9,621 for a used 2010 Outback. 

In addition to the 2010 model’s excellent reliability score, it has an efficient base engine and generous cargo space.

Under the hood is one of two engines: a 2.5-liter four-cylinder or a 3.6-liter six-cylinder. The smaller engine produces 170 hp and 170 lb-ft of torque. In comparison, the V6 harnesses 256 hp and 247 lb-ft of torque. Though the latter is more potent, it’s also less fuel-efficient. 

As for cargo space, the 2010 model has 34.3 cubic feet behind the rear row and a maximum of 71.3 cubic feet with the second-row seats folded flat.

The 2011 Subaru Outback adds satellite radio and a backup camera

Additionally, the 2011 Subaru Outback appears on a few best-of lists. U.S. News ranks this model year third out of 12 vehicles on the list of top 2011 wagons. It also places 14th among used wagons under $20,000.

The 2011 model has the same engine options as the 2010 Outback. However, the 2011 version added satellite radio and a backup camera.  

The 2012 Outback has the same excellent reliability score

The final reliable Subaru Outback year under $10,000 is the 2012 model. Like the previous two years, the 2012 Outback also boasts an 82 in reliability from J.D. Power. In addition, U.S. News ranks the 2012 model No. 1 among wagons that year.

The original MSRP on this model year ranged from $23,295 to $31,695. Now, consumers can expect to pay between $8,816 and $13,075 for a used 2012 Outback.

Like the previous two model years, the 2012 Subaru Outback benefits from standard AWD, a spacious cargo area, and a roomy back seat. Its most significant drawback is that the navigation system has relatively complicated controls.
