Plus, these sport utility vehicles from Mazda, Buick, and Hyundai have at least 25 mpg combined. While the 2021 vehicles are listed below, the 2022 options are pretty similar if you can find a better deal on one over the other.

Subcompact SUVs with plenty of cargo space? Edmunds says the 2021 Mazda CX-30 has 45.2 cubic feet of space, which is good enough for most situations. Mazda equipped the CX-30 with nice interior materials and a quiet cabin. The experts also noted it was fun to drive, feeling “athletic and nimble without the punishing ride you’ll find in other sporty vehicles.”

Due to supply chain constraints, the 2021 and 2022 CX-30 have similar offerings. Some of the best safety features include Smart Brake Support, Mazda Radar Cruise Control, and Lane Departure Warning System.

Fuel economy: 25-28 mpg combined

Buick’s Encore GX is a small SUV with plenty of cargo space

The maximum cargo space for the 2021 Buick Encore GX is 50.2 cubic feet, one of the higher amounts on this list. Edmunds says not to confuse the Encore GX with the regular Encore because these SUVs are pretty different. The interior of the GX is upscale and qualifies as a small SUV with plenty of cargo space.

New engine technology offers improved fuel economy and efficiency, plus 28 to 31 mpg combined. Due to supply chain constraints, the 2021 and 2022 Encore GX have similar offerings. Some of Edmunds’ favorite safety features are Buick Driver Confidence, OnStar and Buick Connected Services, and Teen Driver Monitor.

Don’t overlook the Hyundai Kona

While the 2021 Hyundai Kona looks tiny, it is still one of the best small SUVs with plenty of cargo space. Coming in at 45.8 cubic feet of space, the Kona can hold all of your luggage. Edmunds says the handling is “unusually athletic” and notes it has a 1.6-liter turbo engine offered for those who want more power.

Hyundai offers a great warranty, and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard. Similar to the other options on the list, the 2021 and 2022 Kona are pretty similar. Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist, Driver Attention Warning, and Blind-Spot Collision Warning are some noteworthy safety systems on the Kona.
