The Toyota Camry is a legendary stalwart in the midsize sedan category, and we doubt it’s going anywhere anytime soon. In fact, the Japanese automaker keeps making necessary and tasteful updates to it every year between complete redesigns. According to Consumer Reports, three specific things make the 2023 Camry a standout in its class.

What’s new in the 2023 Toyota Camry?

One of the things that Consumer Reports called out was the 2023 Toyota Camry’s “sleek styling.” We imagined that the publication is likely referring to the car’s new exterior updates for 2023. Those updates include a Nightshade Package for the SE trim level, which includes a black head and taillight trim that match the new black front grille, rear spoiler, mirror caps, and badges.

Most notably, the new Nightshade trim level includes matte bronze 19-inch wheels that match well with the available colors for that package. Those colors include Midnight Black, White, or Reservoir Blue. We recently tested the 2023 Camry Hybrid SE Nightshade in the latter color and were surprised with how good it looked in the sunlight.

The 2023 Camry has plenty of advanced safety features

In addition to the added styling, Consumer Reports called out the Camry’s safety features as important points of consideration. According to Car and Driver, some of the newly added features include automatic high beams and a forward-facing camera that can read road signs and display them on the instrument panel.

Of course, that’s not all the Camry comes with. Every Camry trim level comes standard with Toyota’s Safety Sense 2.5+ package that includes:

  • Pre-collision system with pedestrian detection
  • Lane-departure alert with steering assist
  • Automatic high beams
  • Lane tracing assist
  • Road sign assist
  • Full-speed range dynamic cruise control

This array of safety features make the Camry so safe that the IIHS awarded the 2022 model a “Top Safety Pick +” award, and the NHTSA awarded it an overall 5-star safety rating. The 2023 model-year Camry has not been tested. However, we imagine that it will receive the same rating considering it comes with the same features and more.

Is the 2023 Toyota Camry a good car?

Yes, from what we can see, the 2023 Toyota Camry retains its legendary status in its category. Its sleek styling and host of safety features make it an excellent choice for anyone in the market for a midsize sedan. Lastly, Consumer Reports noted that the Camry’s improved fuel efficiency and handling make it a standout.

During our time with the 2023 Camry Hybrid, we were impressed with the car’s quiet ride and nimbleness in the corners. It’s not a sports car, but it handles its weight well for a sedan, and it’s comfortable during highway drives.

Additionally, the car’s gas mileage is impressive. We averaged 38 mpg with the hybrid model during mixed highway and city driving. For reference, the EPA estimates that the Camry Hybrid SE can get up to 44 mpg in the city and 47 mpg on the highway. Our real-world estimate was lower, but we were also driving at a mile-high elevation.

The non-hybrid Camry can see up to an EPA-estimated 28 mpg in the city and 39 mpg on the highway. That’s impressive and on par with other cars in the category, including the Honda Accord and Nissan Altima.

Ultimately, the 2023 Toyota Camry has plenty to offer drivers in addition to the three categories called out by Consumer Reports. It’s spacious, has plenty of tech-savvy features, and offers a great value proposition as well.
