That is a combined fuel economy of 21 mpg, according to the U.S. Department of Energy and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Using the compare tool on Fueleconomy.gov, the 2022 Hyundai Santa Cruz fits the criteria. For comparison’s sake, the base model and non-all-wheel-drive options were chosen. The 2.5L, four-cylinder, automatic 2022 Hyundai Santa Cruz FWD gets 21 mpg in the city and 26 mpg on the highway.

The estimated annual fuel cost for the 2022 Toyota Tacoma 2WD is $3,500. For the Hyundai Santa Cruz, the estimated annual fuel cost is $3,200, so you would still save around $300. These estimates are based on 55% city driving and around 15,000 yearly miles. That makes the Santa Cruz a truck with better fuel economy than the Toyota Tacoma.

New to the market, the Ford Maverick is a truck with better fuel economy than the Toyota Tacoma

The 2022 Ford Maverick FWD has a 2.0L four-cylinder. Buyers can also opt for the hybrid engine, which offers better fuel economy. This version gets 23 mpg in the city and 30 mpg on the highway. As far as the combined fuel economy goes, the Ford Maverick gets 26 mpg combined.

The significant savings show up when you calculate the annual fuel cost. Compared to the $3,500 of the Tacoma, the Maverick will cost around $2,800. That is about $700 in fuel savings annually.

If you opt for the 2022 Ford Maverick hybrid, that number jumps to 42 mpg in the city and 33 mpg on the highway. That is definitely better fuel economy than the Toyota Tacoma, but it is also impossible to find right now.

Don’t overlook the Ford Ranger pickup truck

The 2022 Ford Ranger 2WD might not look like it gets better fuel economy than the Toyota Tacoma. The 2.3L turbo S10 version gets 21 mpg in the city and 26 mpg on the highway, still topping the Tacoma! For its combined efficiency, the Ford Ranger gets 23 mpg combined.

However, you won’t save too much choosing the Ranger over the Tacoma. The Ranger gets the same $3,200 estimated annual fuel cost. You’ll save around $300, which is better than nothing and makes the Ranger a truck with better fuel economy than the Toyota Tacoma.

These trucks with better fuel economy than the Toyota Tacoma have a lot to offer buyers. Depending on how much capability your new pickup truck needs, most of these should fit the bill. You might not be able to find a Maverick right now, but the other two should be easy enough to find.
