The 2017-2019 Tesla Model S is one of the most exciting used electric vehicles

Naturally, there will be a Tesla model on this list, and the full-size Tesla Model S is no stranger to “best buy” rankings. There were multiple versions available for 2017, 2018, and 2019 Tesla Model S cars, so you should have plenty to shop for. When looking for a used Tesla EV, consumers can choose from a standard, all-wheel drive, and performance version. All models in the lineup offered at least 210 miles of range. The impressive 2017-2019 Tesla Model S Long Range offered up to 370 miles of range when new.

Luxury electric car batteries do lose battery power over time, so a used Tesla Model S’ range likely won’t be as long as it was brand-new. Still, this used luxury electric car should give plenty of room to roam.

The 2017-2019 Tesla Model 3 is a more affordable used luxury EV

The cheaper and smaller Tesla Model 3 arrived in 2017 as an affordable alternative to Tesla’s best-selling EV. This is an excellent choice for a used luxury electric car if you can find one. 2017, 2018, and 2019 Model 3 electric cars all offered a minimum range of 220 miles when new. The Model 3 Long Range packed a bigger battery and offered a range of up to 310 miles. 

Used models are more likely to see a lower range, so be thoughtful when shopping for a used EV. An older Tesla Model 3 with 30,000+ miles onboard is more likely to see less than 200 miles of total range. An EV battery can last up to 10-20 years, according to experts, so you should get many more miles out of a used luxury electric car.

The 2017-2019 BMW i3 is a surprisingly great choice for a used electric car

I feel like the BMW i3 electric car gets passed over these days. Admittedly, it does have a compact and squat body style, and the i3 EV was discontinued at the end of 2021. But, the BMW i3 hatchback was designed with eco-friendly cabin materials, and it was pretty fun to drive. Early models in the electric BMW’s history offered only around 80-115 miles of electric range, but performance increased to about 152 miles. 

You could also opt for a BMW i3 with a small gas engine to extend its range. The heavier hybrid-electric car took a hit in total EV range, but its overall combined range (gas+electric) was an impressive 200 miles. Don’t count a used BMW i3 out. You may find exactly what you’re looking for.

How to buy a used luxury electric car that will last

These three cars are just a handful of great used electric vehicle options available today, according to Cars.com. However, they may not be the most reliable EVs for the money.
