3 Used SUVs With the Best Gas Mileage
Not all SUVs are created equal, especially regarding fuel economy. Edmunds recommends these used SUVs with the best gas mileage. Lexus, Mazda, and Toyota make reliable sport utility vehicles, which are no exception.
The Lexus NX 300h is one of the best used SUVs with the best gas mileage
Edmunds didn’t find much to dislike about the 2016 Lexus NX 300h. A bit smaller than the ever-popular RX SUV, the NX still has plenty of space in the backseat and cargo area. The interior is as luxurious as buyers might anticipate, and the technology is up to date. Lexus equipped the 2016 NX 300h with a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine and two electric motors, which works out to about 32 mpg combined.
That 32 mpg combined is some of the best-in-class fuel economy and has plenty of technology for a 2016 vehicle. Edmunds estimates that this SUV would cost around $132 a month for fuel cost, far below the $214 a month average. That makes this a good buy for some used SUVs with the best gas mileage.
List Price Range: $27,990 – $33,998
Mazda’s CX-5 is another used SUV with the best gas mileage
Edmunds says the 2016 Mazda CX-5 feels sporty but handles corners well. While Mazda offers a few engine types, the 2.5-liter engine returns 29 mpg combined with front-wheel drive. With all-wheel drive, the fuel economy drops down to 26 mpg. Either way, the CX-5 is a good pick for used SUVs with the best gas mileage.
Abundant cargo space, a comfortable ride, and interior quality are all attributes of this Mazda SUV. Antilock brakes, stability and traction control, and front-side airbags are some of the safety features. Edmunds estimates the 2016 CX-5 costs around $151 a month to drive, far below the average $207 for this segment.
List Price Range: $16,395 – $25,998
Don’t overlook the Toyota Highlander Hybrid as one of the best all-around vehicles
The 2016 Toyota Highlander Hybrid is a three-row SUV with a long history of reliability. Experts and drivers agree that the Highlander is a great SUV and the hybrid powertrain only adds to the allure. The combined fuel economy works out to be 36 mpg overall with the front-wheel drive option. All-wheel drive is 35 mpg combines.
Toyota gave the Highlander plenty of cargo space and technology, making it one of the best SUVs out there. The third row isn’t the most spacious in the lineup, but it works for stuff or children. Edmunds estimates the Highlander Hybrid LE will cost about $119 a month for fuel, far less than the $214 a month in the segment average.
MSRP range: $39,555 – $51,460
While you don’t need a hybrid, this powertrain offers better fuel economy. There aren’t that many options within this segment and price range, but hopefully, this list gets you started. Don’t be afraid to expand your search if there isn’t anything in your immediate area. There might be a more extensive selection and a better deal nearby.
