Recall alert! If you have a Ram HD truck or a Dodge Durango SUV, your vehicle may need to go in for service. The 2500 and 3500 Ram heavy-duty trucks are both at risk of this annoying software issue that needs to be corrected at a dealership. 

Ram HD and Dodge Durango models have a software recall 

The Ram HD is in the spotlight again for another recall. This is the second month in a row that Ram heavy-duty trucks have been part of a significant recall for hundreds of models. Only this time, Ram 2500 and 3500 trucks aren’t alone because the Dodge Durango faces the same issue. 

According to Cars.com, these vehicles have a software glitch. The malfunction indicator lamp might not illuminate when the electronic stability control system experiences a fault. As a result, vehicle control may become difficult during adverse weather conditions. 

The primary purpose of the electronic stability program of dynamic stability control is to detect and reduce the loss of traction by individually applying the brakes. More advanced systems will also reduce engine power until the driver regains steering control. 

Reportedly the software in the anti-lock braking system’s control module prevents the indicator light from illuminating in certain conditions. This means it fails to comply with the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 126, which regulates electronic stability control systems in United States vehicles. 

What to do if your Ram heavy-duty truck or Dodge Durango is at risk 

The vehicles at risk include 2019 – 2022 Ram 2500 trucks, 2019 – 2022 Ram 3500 chassis cabs with a gross vehicle rate of under 10,000 lbs, and 2021 – 2022 Dodge Durango models. Owners of Ram HD models or Durangos at risk will be notified via mail around April 29. 

But you don’t have to wait that long to see if your vehicle needs service. You can visit the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) site here to learn more. 

Enter your 17-digit Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) to see if it falls under this recall. You can also call Stellantis at 800-853-1403 with any questions that you may have. 

Luckily there is a simple fix for these vehicles. The ABS control module software will be updated for free. If you already paid to have the software reflashed, you might be eligible for reimbursement with the original receipt or proof of payment. 

We’re currently unaware of how long this process will take. You don’t have to return to the same dealership where you purchased your vehicle for maintenance. A local Dodge, Ram, or Stellantis dealership will be fine. However, we recommend calling ahead or scheduling an appointment online to avoid long waiting times. 

What was the other Ram heavy-duty recall? 

Last month, Ram HD trucks were recalled due to having faulty windshield wipers. The wiper arms may loosen, causing improper function. This could limit driver visibility in certain weather conditions. 

Trucks as risk include 2019 – 2020 2500, 3500, 3500 chassis cab, 4500 chassis cab, and 5500 chassis cab models. Jeep Compass models are at risk too. The fix involves dealerships tightening the wiper nuts for free. Stellantis will begin notifying owners about this issue via mail by March 18.
