Automakers are producing fewer large cars thanks to their declining popularity. But Toyota and Volkswagen continue making the Avalon and Arteon. They’re two of the main choices for buyers unwilling to give in to crossover SUVs’ charms. The 2023 Volkswagen Arteon and Toyota Avalon give consumers quite a few reasons to consider buying a full-size sedan. But here are four ways the Arteon outshines the Avalon.

The 2023 Volkswagen Arteon has a better limited warranty than the Toyota Avalon

One advantage the 2023 Volkswagen Arteon has over the Toyota Avalon is its limited warranty. Drivers can count on the limited warranty for four years or 50,000 miles. VW’s Carefree Coverage also offers peace of mind for new car owners. According to Volkswagen, standard coverage includes scheduled maintenance for two years or 20,000 miles and roadside assistance for three years or 36,000 miles.

Meanwhile, Toyota’s limited warranty is for only three years or 36,000 miles. However, its powertrain warranty is for five years or 60,000 miles. In addition, the Avalon’s scheduled maintenance warranty is for two years or 25,000 miles, whichever comes first. And 24-hour roadside assistance is included for two years and unlimited miles, according to Toyota.

The 2023 Volkswagen Arteon gets better gas mileage than the Toyota Avalon

With gas prices fluctuating as much as they are these days, fuel economy can be an important consideration. And here, too, Volkswagen bests the Avalon. The Arteon’s fuel efficiency are impressive for a large car. The front-wheel-drive Arteon offers an EPA-estimated 25 mpg in the city, 33 mpg on the highway, and 28 mpg combined. The numbers for the all-wheel-drive version are almost as good: 22 mpg in the city, 31 mpg on the highway, and 25 mpg combined.

On the other hand, the FWD Avalon gets an EPA-estimated 22 mpg in the city, 31 mpg on the highway, and 25 mpg combined. (However, if you buy a hybrid Avalon, those numbers will improve considerably, but that comes with a higher purchase price.) 

The Arteon has available all-wheel drive

That mention of the AWD Arteon brings us to our next point: Volkswagen’s 4Motion all-wheel drive is standard on Arteon SEL and SEL Premium R-Line models. The manufacturer’s 4Motion technology is designed to prevent wheel spins and loss of traction to enhance safety on the road. 

Unfortunately, the new Toyota Avalon does not offer similar AWD technology. Though the Avalon used to come with an AWD option, as of 2022, that option is no longer available.  

The VW boasts more cargo capacity and cabin space

Finally, there’s the question of roominess. If you’re interested in a large car, you likely want plenty of space for people and their belongings. 

According to Edmunds, the Arteon offers 123.7 cubic feet of interior volume and 27.2 cubic feet of cargo space. Compare that with the Avalon — offering 120.4 cubic feet of EPA interior volume and 16.1 cubic feet of cargo space — and you can see why shoppers in search of roominess will prefer the Volkswagen. 

For those reasons, it’s clear the 2023 Volkswagen Arteon offers plenty of advantages over the Toyota Avalon. Keep them in mind while weighing the pros and cons of these large cars.
