Toyota has an impressive SUV product lineup, with the Toyota RAV4 compact SUV among the best-selling cars in the world. The Japanese automaker offers something for everyone, from family-friendly models like the Highlander to eco-friendly hybrids such as the RAV4. Toyota also co-developed the brand’s first fully all-electric bZ4X compact crossover SUV with Subaru, which is available this year.

Other current models include the full-size Sequoia, midsize 4Runner, Venza, and stylish subcompact C-HR. The all-new Corolla Cross is the brand’s newest entry into the SUV segment. For drivers looking for exceptional quality, dependability, and competitive pricing, these are the four best Toyota SUVs to buy in 2023, according to MotorTrend.

The 2023 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid ranks number one among other compact hybrid SUVs, receiving a MotorTrend overall score of 8.9 out of 10. The base model LE trim has a starting MSRP of $30,725, with the top-of-the-line RAV4 Hybrid Limited Edition all-wheel drive trim starting at $39,030.

The RAV4 Hybrid is more efficient and faster than the traditional gas combustion model and offers an impressive array of standard tech and driver assist features. The compact hybrid SUV has a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine paired with dual electric motors and CVT automatic transmission that generates 219 hp, hitting 0 to 60 mph in 7.1 seconds. The EPA estimated fuel economy is 41 mpg in the city and 38 mpg on the highway.

MotorTrend claims, “The RAV4 Hybrid stands head and shoulders over the gasoline-only model with a refined drivetrain that improves acceleration and fuel economy compared to its stablemates.”

The interior has an upscale feel with a stylish design and ample use of premium soft-touch materials that simulate the elegant atmosphere of the brand’s Lexus luxury line. An upgraded infotainment system and expansive standard safety features are welcome additions to the 2023 model year.

2. The 2023 Toyota RAV4 Prime

The 2023 Toyota RAV4 Prime is rated the number one compact plug-in hybrid SUV by MotorTrend, receiving an exceptional overall score of 9.3 out of 10. The MSRP for the eco-friendly model ranges between $42,340 and $46,210, with a fuel economy rating of 105 mpg in the city and 84 mpg on the highway. The five-passenger SUV has plenty of EV driving range and an impressive array of standard safety features.

The RAV4 Prime plug-in hybrid is the fastest SUV in the Toyota lineup, featuring an inline four-cylinder 2.5-liter gas engine drivetrain paired with a dual-motor electric drivetrain that delivers powerful performance. The 18.1 kWh battery pack allows for an estimated total EV range of 600 miles and lasts more than 40 miles before the gas engine takes over.

According to MotorTrend, the total system output is 302 hp, and they clocked the 0 to 60 mph sprint at just 5.5 seconds, “making it quicker than every Toyota product aside from the GR Supra.”

3. The 2023 Toyota Highlander Hybrid

The 2023 Toyota Highlander Hybrid ranks number one in the three-row hybrid SUV segment, receiving a MotorTrend overall score of 8.7 out of 10. The MSRP ranges between $40,220 and $52,625 and offers an EV range of 600 miles with an outstanding fuel economy of 36 mpg in the city and 35 mpg on the highway.

The family-friendly eight-passenger SUV offers 84 cu-ft of cargo carrying capacity with ample legroom and headroom for passengers. However, the third row does tend to be slightly cramped for adults.

The 2023 Toyota Highlander Hybrid is powered by an inline four-cylinder 2.5-liter engine paired with dual motors and automatic transmission, generating 243 hp and 17 lb-ft of torque, going from 0 to 60 mph in 8.4 seconds. MotorTrend notes, “The electrified Highlander offers a compelling alternative to its gas-powered sibling.”

4. The 2023 Toyota Venza

While the 2023 Toyota Venza doesn’t earn the top spot among midsize SUVs, MotorTrend ranks it third in a crowded segment, saying, “the Venza offers fresh style, advanced tech, a premium interior, and a hybrid-only powertrain.” They claim, “It’s definitely not the biggest SUV in its class, but it’s still a great option.”

The Toyota Venza features three electric motors paired with a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine and a lithium-ion battery for a total system output of 219 hp and an impressive 39 mpg fuel economy.

The upscale interior nicely complements the full suite of improved standard safety features. The MSRP ranges between $34,120 and $42,265. Drivers will appreciate the money-saving two-year or 25,000-mile complimentary maintenance program that makes driving a Venza hybrid appealing.
