The Subaru Impreza has been a near-constant compact gem since its debut in 1992. Six generations of rally-bred Japanese sedans and hatchbacks have been loved by average consumers and enthusiasts alike. But that doesn’t mean each model year is the best pick as a used car. Below are four of the best used Impreza model years at least five years old and four to avoid.

2016 Subaru Impreza

With 4.4 out of 5 stars from Edmunds, the 2016 Impreza provided customers with ample interior space in a competent all-weather car. Even better, 2016 was the second year the Impreza featured standard all-wheel drive. It also garnered few complaints from owners.

2015 Subaru Impreza

Imprezas from 2015 boast some of the lowest numbers of consumer complaints. Also, a rearview camera became standard in all trim levels in 2015.

2011 Subaru Impreza

The 2011 model year stands out became it was far less problematic than its successors, Engine Patrol says. The 2012 and 2013 Imprezas were prone to cause owners issues with the airbags, among other things.

2003 Subaru Impreza

It’s probably not the best idea to go after a car that’s 20 years old. But if you do, there’s a likelihood that things will hold up. Kelley Blue Book rated it 4.7 out of 5 stars. Moreover, it’s one of the least complained about models.

While there are plenty of Impreza model years to laud, there are just as many to shun. Below are those CarComplaints reports as having the most consumer-reported problems.

2018 Subaru Impreza

Although major rework was done to its predecessor, there were more issues in the 2018 model. At least 32 customer complaints indicate problems throughout the car. Notably, oil leaks and a host of electrical troubles plagued this Impreza.

2012 Subaru Impreza

Customers logged fewer complaints about the 2012 Impreza. However, there were instances of more problems at lower mileage, which led to higher repair bills.

2008 Subaru Impreza

The 2008 model had 293 customer complaints. The most significant area of fault was with the 2.5-liter flat-four engine. Consumers reported a myriad of issues, including gasket leaks, knocking, abnormal revving, and broken belts.

2002 Subaru Impreza

Seeing 340 complaints is a cause for concern. Most of them regard issues with the fuel delivery system. Though, the National Highway Traffic and Safety Administration didn’t issue a recall until 2009.

How does the 2023 Subaru Impreza stack up?

There haven’t been major changes to the Subaru Impreza since its complete redesign in 2017. While that means it probably won’t have issues with build quality in newly-introduced tech and features, it does have its drawbacks.

U.S. News ranks the 2023 Impreza near the bottom of the compact car segment. It only beats out the Nissan Sentra and the rally-derived WRX. The current model has a well-balanced ride, an easy-to-use infotainment touchscreen, and more than enough headroom and legroom all around. However, it sports a wheezy engine. Many sedan competitors offer far better fuel economy, acceleration, and interior amenities.
