There are some cars we have driven over the years that are meant to be fun to drive and others that are not. Some of the most fun cars we have experienced include the Lexus LC 500, the Toyota Supra, and the Toyota GR86. As for the cars that weren’t that fun to drive, the Toyota CH-R and Tacoma come to mind.

Out of the many cars we have driven, we realized that a few of them were never meant to instill excitement in the driver, but lo and behold, they did. No, they weren’t the fastest or most agile cars on the road, but there’s something about them that put a small smile on our faces after slipping behind the wheel. As they say, “It’s more fun to drive a slow car fast than drive a fast car slow.”

Here are four boring cars that were actually pretty fun to drive in real life.

1. 2022 Hyundai Kona EV

First on the list is the 2022 Hyundai Kona EV. Yes, it’s an electric vehicle, so you probably already know what we’re going to say. Its electric motor only puts out 201 hp, but it’s the instantaneous torque that makes it snappy. Stab the throttle, and you’ll feel all 295 lb-ft push you back in the seat from the get-go.

Couple that power with surprising agility from its hatchback stature, and you have yourself a pretty fun car to drive. No, the Kona EV is not a Tesla that can go 0-60 mph in a few seconds, but it will still put a smile on your face every time you floor it.

2. 2022 Toyota RAV4 Prime

We don’t think that Toyota really meant for the RAV4 Prime to be a pocket rocket. After all, it’s essentially just a RAV4 plug-in hybrid with enough electric juice to get you to work and back. However, when it debuted, many publications like Car and Driver marveled at the RAV4 Prime’s 5.4-second 0-60 mph time.

We admit it’s impressive. And in the real world, you really can feel the torque from the electric motor off the line. The RAV4 Prime gets up to speed quickly, and although it’s not a sports car, the extra torque makes it more fun to drive than the regular RAV4.

3. 2022 Toyota Prius

We might get a little hate and confusion for this one, but hear us out. No, the Toyota Prius is not fast by any means, but its electric motor makes it feel quick when accelerating from a stop. Of course, we left the car in “power” mode the whole time we had it and floored it as much as possible – while remaining legal.

Let’s be clear, flooring a Prius doesn’t mean you’ll get up to break-neck speeds in a flash; you won’t. But the initial burst of acceleration makes it fun, and when you get up to speed or past the limit, most of the cars around you won’t even take a second look at you because you’re in a Prius. In fact, they may even be happy that you’re driving faster than normal.

4. 2022 Honda Civic Touring

We have driven the 2022 Civic Si and the 2020 Honda Civic Type R, and both are supremely fun to drive. But we also drove the regular 2022 Civic Touring, which is supposed to be a simple commuter car. Don’t get us wrong, it is a great commuter and served us well by getting great gas mileage during the time we had it.

But we never would have thought that its 180-hp engine and agile handling would make it fun to drive. The Civic felt composed and tossable on the canyon roads we put it through, and it even felt strong when driving at 10,000 feet of elevation. If you can’t afford the fun of a Civic Si or Type R, the Civic Touring is a pretty good substitute.

Plenty of boring cars on the market are fun to drive. Most people, especially car enthusiasts, may disagree. But just because a car is slow, it doesn’t mean that it can’t be fun.
