While the Toyota Mirai has gotten a bad rap for being a poor-selling vehicle, it’s actually doing pretty well despite its major limitation. How well is it doing in the market and are there any vehicles selling less than the Mirai? Here we take a look at four cars that fell short in the sales arena. We’ll also take a look at why they might not be doing so well. 

4 cars that sold less cars than the Toyota Mirai

According to GoodCarBadCar, the Toyota Mirai has a year-to-date sales figure of 2,185, which isn’t too bad considering the Mirai is a hydrogen-fueled vehicle. Because of that, purchases for it are limited as there aren’t many hydrogen fuel stations in the country. The ones that do exist are in California, which is why you can only buy it in that state. 

There are a handful of vehicles that have even less year-to-date figures than the Toyota, though. First, there’s the Hyundai Accent, a subcompact sedan. This vehicle sold 31 models. Another car with poor sales figures is the Lexus LS, which brought only 1,395 units. 

Genesis’ G90 didn’t fare too well, either. This model had 811 sales, which is over 1,000 less than the Mirai. The last notable vehicle with fewer sales was the Toyota Supra, the brand’s sports car. With this model, the brand only sold 1,778 units. 

Why aren’t these four vehicles selling poorly? Let’s take a look at some possible reasons. 

Hyundai Accent

This model was actually discontinued after the 2022 model year. The Accent gets excellent fuel economy, bringing 33 mpg in the city and 41 mpg on the highway. However, it comes at a cost. Powering up the vehicle is only a 1.6-liter four-cylinder producing 120 hp and 113 lb-ft of torque. 

It’s also pretty affordable at $17,770 for the base, but you won’t get much for driver assistance features for this price. You have to pay around $20,000 to get those included with your purchase. 

Lexus LS

There’s a lot to like about the Lexus LS. Under the hood is a 3.4-liter V6 engine producing 416 hp and it’s paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission. It also offers some luxury features, like leather upholstery. It also gives you average fuel economy ratings. You get 22 mpg on city roads and 29 mpg when traveling on the highway. 

The biggest drawback, though, has to be the price point for this model. The base comes in at $76,885. There are plenty of luxury packages to add to your purchase, though, but expect to pay quite a bit more. You will have to be careful because a few of those add-ons can bring the price over $100,000 pretty easily. 

Genesis G90

The Genesis G90 is known for its high-reliability ratings, which isn’t surprising since it’s a sub-brand from Hyundai Motor Company. This luxury sedan offers a luxurious driving experience as well. 

Like the Lexus LS, the G90 also commands a pretty high price tag. It starts at $88,400 for the base. If you want to tweak the engine’s performance, you’ll have to fork over another $10,000 or so. 

Toyota Supra

Why the Toyota Supra isn’t selling as well currently is up in the air. This sports car has it all, including excellent safety features, plus it comes at a pretty affordable price. For $53,000 to start, you get a decent engine. Powering it up is a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder producing 255 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque. 

As for why sales are poor, the only thing that comes to mind is just that it’s a sports car, which means it isn’t going to be too user-friendly for families looking for a ton of space to haul items with. 

The Mirai has sold over 2,000 new cars when you look at the year-to-date figures. But, it isn’t the worst-selling vehicle on the sales charts. The Toyota Supra, Lexus LS, Hyundai Accent, and the Genesis G90 have made fewer sales than Toyota’s hydrogen car that’s limited to being sold only in California.
