There is an abundance of electric vehicles available, and many more are on the way. Most major automakers have at least one EV. When it comes to electric convertible cars, though, consumers don’t have any choices. Unless you count the GMC Hummer EV with its removable roof panels, there aren’t any new electric convertibles currently available in the United States. However, that will soon change. Check out these four exciting upcoming electric convertible cars. 

2nd-generation Tesla Roadster

Given the immense popularity of electric cars such as the Model 3 and Model S, it can be easy to forget that the original Tesla Roadster kicked off a successful run for the EV automaker in 2008. Soon, the Roadster will make a comeback with the 2nd-generation model.

The Tesla Roadster will boast a 0-60 mph acceleration time of 1.9 seconds and a top speed of 250 mph. With its 200-kWh battery, it has an estimated driving range of up to 620 miles. For a convertible layout, the Roadster has a removable glass-panel roof, which you can stow in the trunk. Also, while the original Roadster had only two seats, the 2nd-generation Roadster will have four. 

The new Roadster was supposed to be released as a 2021 model. However, it has been beset by delays, pushing its release back. The latest target for the Roaster is the 2023 model year. 

MG Cyberster electric convertible

Of all the upcoming electric convertibles, the MG Cyberster might have the most striking design. British automaker MG has a reputation for building cars with unique styling — and continues this practice with the futuristic look of the Cyberster. 

MG is also known for producing affordable vehicles. With this in mind, the Cyberster will likely be a much cheaper alternative to the Tesla Roadster. While it won’t achieve Tesla Roadster-like performance specs, the estimated 500-mile driving range of the Cyberster is still very good.

MG will celebrate its 100th anniversary in 2024. TopElectricSUV states that to help celebrate the centenary, the automaker is fast-tracking the production of the Cyberster for a 2024 release.

Chevy Corvette EV Convertible

The Chevy Corvette is one of the most beloved sports cars of all time, and it experienced a resurgence over the past few years with the eighth-generation (C8) model. Now, Chevrolet plans to go all-electric with the Corvette EV.

The details on the Corvette EV are sparse. However, given the success of the open-air version of the sports car, you can expect an electric Corvette Convertible to be available as well. The Corvette Convertible is one of the best-selling convertibles of all time. Also, around 50% of orders of the 2022 Corvette are for the convertible version. 

It’s unknown when the Corvette EV will be available. However, Car and Driver speculates that the Corvette EV could debut in 2024 as a 2025 model. 

Electric MINI Cooper SE Convertible

MINI already offers an electric car with the 2023 MINI Cooper SE Electric, and a convertible version is expected to be available by 2025, as detailed by HC. Recently, the British automaker unveiled the electric MINI Cooper SE Convertible Concept at the MINI Takes the States event. With its attractive styling, it could very well earn the title of the “cutest EV.”

Car and Driver had the chance to drive the Electric MINI Cooper SE Convertible around Miami — and were very impressed. The automotive site said that it had excellent handling and was fun-to-drive.

While there are not any new electric convertible cars currently available in the U.S., some enticing models are coming. Whether it’s the Tesla Roadster, MG Cyberster, Chevy Corvette EV Convertible, or Electric MINI Cooper SE Convertible, you could soon enjoy open-air EV driving excitement.
