Despite this, there are a few reasons you might want to avoid the 2022 Dodge Durango, and while some of its problems are subjective, one deals with safety.

The 2022 Dodge Durango doesn’t have a Hellcat

The 2022 Dodge Durango certainly has a major appeal because of its powerful engine. It’s one of the only three-row SUVs that has the personality of a sports cars. Yet one of the biggest changes that the Dodge Durango is undergoing is the loss of the Hellcat. It was only around for a year, and it’s already done. That makes the 2022 Dodge Durango SRT392 the top-level trim, according to Mopar Insiders.

The Dodge Durango is relatively unchanged

If you’ve been loving the Dodge Durango for years, maybe you’ll be pleased that it isn’t undergoing any major changes for the 2022 model year. Dodge isn’t going to do a major rehaul of the Dodge Durango for another year or so. Instead, the 2022 Dodge Durango has gotten a good old-fashioned midcycle refresh, which will include minor changes that should make it more comfortable and appealing.

The Durango only has three powertrains

One of the big benefits of the Dodge Durango is its versatility. Yet while the 2021 Dodge Durango had four available powertrains, the 2022 Dodge Durango has just three. These include a 3.4-liter V6 that makes 293 hp and 260 lb-ft of torque. The 5.7-liter V8 makes 360 hp and 390 lb-ft of torque. And the most powerful engine, the 6.4-liter V8, makes 475 hp and 470 lb-ft of torque. These are pretty respectable powertrains, and perhaps you won’t miss that fourth option.

The Durango’s safety ratings aren’t great

The 2022 Dodge Durango was tested by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) and it doesn’t hold any safety awards. The IIHS gives out a Top Safety Pick and Top Safety Pick+ award and the Durango falls short of both of these. It has a marginal small overlap test on the driver side, though the other categories that have been rated by the IIHS have good scores. Its safety systems haven’t been rated yet.

The Durango’s predicted reliability isn’t great

Consumer Reports predicts a vehicle’s reliability by using its own knowledge of cars as well as subscriber surveys. It doesn’t predict that the Durango’s reliability is going to be all that great. It’s basing this partly on Dodge’s brand as well as how previous Durangos have held up.

The 2022 Dodge Durango isn’t without its problems, but some of them may not be enough to make you think twice about buying one. After all, it’s still an attractive SUV with a powerful engine and plenty of seating to make it a potential family car. Yet its safety ratings may make you reconsider whether its positive attributes are enough to outweigh it.
