Trucks are finally getting the attention they deserve from designers. We’re no longer stuck with a V8, and a two-box layout. Instead, for 2023 we can’t wait to sample the new EV trucks from Chevy, Ford, and likely Toyota, and lay our eyes on the flowing buttresses of the Silverado EV. But, we are also looking forward to an all-new Silverado HD, and sampling its new burst of low-end diesel torque.

The Ram EV is shrouded in mystery

We know that the Ram EV truck is on its way. But, when and what will it look like? Those are great questions that Ram hasn’t answered yet. Regardless, we will finally get to a glimpse of one at the L.A. Auto Show this November, according to InsideEVs.

We know that truck will ride on a new platform designed specifically for truck duty. That platform has motors in front and back, which means the truck will have all-wheel drive. In the handful of official images that Ram has shared, it looks to be more stylized that the Ford F-150 Lightning, which simply looks like an F-150 with a smooth grille. Also, last month the CEO of Ram Trucks said that the truck will need to do truck things, and that means haul, tow, and have a range of 300 to 350 miles.

The new Silverado HD should be a big step up

Not every truck we’re excited about is electric. For 2022, Chevy significantly updated the regular Silverado, and next year it’s the big truck’s turn. Everything will be updated on the gas-and diesel-powered Silverado HD trucks, which are Chevy’s largest, most capable, trucks. The interior will look more like the ½ ton Silverado’s, and it will get a 13.4-inch touch screen and a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster.  

The new-for 2024 Silverado HD gets a stout new version of the mighty Duramax 6.6-liter turbo diesel that will make 470 horsepower and an astounding 975 lb-ft of torque, and it will have an improved torque curve, so we’ll get more of that power down low in the rev range. We’re also looking forward to the new ZR2 version.

The 2024 Chevy Silverado EV is coming in 2023

With the 2024 Chevy Silverado EV, we’re getting a lot of promises from Chevy. This truck can do it all, from its humble work truck version to a hot-rod version that has 664 horsepower and can tow up to 10,000 pounds. It sounds great, and it sounds like it will be fun, and hit 60 miles per hour in 4.5 seconds, according to Chevy.

But we’re forced to wait until next year to drive this Ford F-150 Lightning competitor. The Silverado has some styling that should set it apart from regular trucks, like flying buttresses behind the cab that disappear into the bed, and a broad flat grille. In fall 2023, a fully loaded RST First Edition model, also delivering a 400-mile range, will debut with an MSRP of $105,000, Chevy says, while the $39,900 Work Truck will arrive later.

We can’t wait for Toyota’s first new Tacoma in 18 years

It’s hard to believe that the same basic Toyota Tacoma has been around for nearly 20 years. It still looks fresh, especially in TRD trims, but it’s V6 is outdated and its cabin is cramped compared to the growing number of competitors. Chevy and GMC now make turbocharged four-cylinder trucks that make more power.

But, if we had a magic 8-ball, it would say “signs point to yes,” for a new Tacoma in 2024. What can we expect? We’re expecting it to take some cues from the new-for-2022 Tundra and get a bolder face and more capability. We’re also expecting it to get a more powerful engine. Car and Driver expects the truck to get the Lexus turbocharged 2.4-liter engine. We’re expecting a hybrid system like the Tundra, and possibly even an electric version.
