The 2022 Chevy Camaro is cheaper than the 2022 Ford Mustang

Times are tough, and car prices—both new and used—are crazy high right now. Affordability isn’t the main item for many sports-car buyers, but the Camaro is more affordable overall than the Mustang.

The 2022 Chevrolet Camaro starts at just over $26,000 for the base model. That’s outrageously affordable for a muscle car like this, comparable to a Toyota Camry. The 2022 Ford Mustang isn’t much more expensive, with base models starting at around $27,205. However, the cost of ownership for the Camaro is likely going to be cheaper overall, because the Camaro should be cheaper to insure. 

Things get murky in the upper trim levels. A fully loaded Camaro ZL1 is slightly more expensive than a fully loaded Mustang, at $77,000 and $73,000, respectively. But, once you get above $70K for a sports car, what’s an extra four grand or so?

The 2022 Camaro has better predicted reliability than the 2022 Mustang

U.S. News provides predicted reliability ratings for most cars that it reviews, and the 2022 Chevrolet Camaro receives an impressive 80 out of 100 points. While the 2022 Mustang model doesn’t currently have a predicted reliability rating, the reliability of the Ford Mustang doesn’t have a great reputation. You’ll likely be better served by the Camaro.

For some peace of mind, both sports cars offer similar new-vehicle warranty coverage. Both Chevrolet and Ford offer a five-year/60,000-mile powertrain warranty and a three-year/36,000-mile general warranty.

The thrill of driving a muscle car is less thrilling when you’re stuck in traffic, pulling a multi-hour straight-line cruise on the highway, or putzing around a busy city. You want to make sure that your daily driver sports car can keep you entertained. 

The 2022 Chevrolet Camaro offers more standard features than the 2022 Ford Mustang, including a 7-inch touch screen with smartphone connectivity and automatic climate control. In comparison, the base Mustang feels minimalist—and not in a good, cool way.

The 2022 Camaro comes standard with Chevrolet’s Infotainment 3 system. According to U.S. News, “Chevrolet’s Infotainment 3 system features intuitive menu layouts that make it easy to find and adjust settings. The touch screen has crisp graphics and responds quickly to inputs, but the awkward angle of the display makes it unnecessarily tough to see.” It also claims that it’s worth it to upgrade to a model with a larger screen.

Meanwhile, the 2022 Ford Mustang offers a standard base infotainment system that’s simple to use—but only because it doesn’t give you much. To get anything, you’ll need to pay more for the SYNC 3 system.

With all this in mind: choose the Camaro over the Mustang

While U.S. News chose the Mustang as the winner in its head-to-head-to-head competition, there are some pretty compelling reasons to choose the 2022 Chevrolet Camaro over the 2022 Ford Mustang. It’s more affordable, more reliable, and gives you way more features for the price.
