The Porsche Taycan is the German automaker’s flagship electric vehicle, and it’s already made a considerable impression on consumers. The EV has won awards for its exhilarating performance and impressive interior, proving it’s as good as any gas-powered Porsche. Even in its own family, the Taycan faces fierce competition. The Panamera has an exceptional driving character, and its roomy dimensions make it a popular choice for families. Still, the 2022 Porsche Taycan boasts at least four perks the Panamera can’t provide.

1. The 2022 Porsche Taycan doesn’t use gas

The 2022 Porsche Taycan has a wide range of powertrain options, but all of them are electric. The upgraded battery in the Taycan 4S has the highest estimated range of 227 miles on a full charge. The base Porsche Taycan still has the highest MPGe: 79 combined city/highway.

The Turbo models are slightly less efficient but get at least 200 miles of range. It’s still much cheaper to pay for electricity than gas, especially with today’s prices. According to the Department of Energy, if you’re a Taycan driver in Illinois, you might spend only $700 on fuel each year.

However, if you drive a Panamera in the same state, you could pay upward of $1,800 for gas annually. At best, the Porsche Panamera with RWD gets only 18/24 mpg city/highway, U.S. News reports. The GTS and Turbo models have even worse fuel economy, earning 15/21 mpg city/highway.

2. The Porsche Taycan has a lower starting price

Considering the Porsche Taycan’s performance abilities and luxury nameplate, its starting price isn’t that bad. According to Car and Driver, the base trim costs $84,050 on average. The most expensive model is the Turbo S, which usually costs around $186,350.

The range-topping Porsche Panamera GTS is more than $50,000 cheaper than the Porsche Taycan’s highest trim. However, Car and Driver reports that the standard Panamera costs an average of $89,750. Its 4S trim, which C/D considers the best value, is also usually $2,600 more expensive than the Taycan’s.

3. The EV also has quicker acceleration

During a C/D test drive, the Porsche Taycan 4S rocketed from 0 to 60 mph in 3.4 seconds. When using overboost, these models can harness up to 522 hp and 472 lb-ft of torque.

The Porsche Taycan Turbo S is a full second faster by C/D’s estimates. Its dual-motor setup allows it to generate up to 750 hp and 774 lb-ft of torque.

The Porsche Panamera 4S is slightly slower, needing 0.2 extra seconds (3.6) to hit 60 mph. According to MotorTrend, the Panamera GTS is only 0.4 seconds quicker than that, putting it 0.8 seconds behind the Taycan Turbo S.

Most drivers might not notice such small integers, but they’re important factors when you have performance goals. Additionally, C/D says the Panamera’s suspension has a harsh quality that testers didn’t detect while driving the Taycan.

4. The 2022 Porsche Taycan is cheaper to maintain

We’ve already learned the Porsche Taycan is less expensive in terms of fuel, but regular maintenance is also cheaper. Taycan maintenance costs around $4,000 over five years, whereas the Panamera costs $7,654. You’ll save over $27,000 in ownership costs on the Porsche Taycan over five years.

That’s not to say the Porsche Taycan is perfect. Its range is slightly disappointing by EV standards, and its overwhelming amount of touch controls can be a turnoff. Still, the Taycan’s fine-tuned performance and lower ownership costs make it an attractive choice over the Panamera.
