Tesla may have set the bar for luxury EV power, performance, and everyday use, with its Model S, but Porsche wasn’t about to sit idly by in the EV space. The Porsche Taycan is intended to be the automaker’s answer to the Model S. So, how does it compare?

With the Tesla Model S and the Porsche Taycan on your shortlist of new car considerations, you’re ready for the ultimate comparison of features and capabilities. Despite Porsche’s best efforts, the Model S might still be the better buy. Here are four reasons to buy the 2022 Tesla Model S over the 2022 Porsche Taycan.

1. The Tesla Model S has more horsepower

One of the most significant aspects you’ll consider is performance and horsepower. Both the Model S and the Taycan have some gusto. Car and Driver shares insights about its evaluation of the Porsche, suggesting you can expect anywhere from 522 horsepower with the Taycan 4S up to 750 hp with the Turbo S. As impressive as that sounds, even with the standard two-speed innovative transmission for super-thrilling shifts, it doesn’t touch the power of the Tesla Model S.

The Model S is getting a refresh for 2022, with fresh designs and two new tri-motor variations, according to MotorTrend. The Tesla Model S Plaid achieves a monstrous 1,020 horsepower with 1,050 lb-ft of torque. The team points out that regardless of which trim version you choose, “serious speed” is standard. The Model S Plaid tested scorched pavement with a 0-60 time of 1.98 seconds, making it the quickest vehicle the team ever tested.

2. The Model S has a longer range

The next aspect you’ll likely want to compare is the driving range on a full charge. The 2022 Porsche Taycan doesn’t necessarily earn bragging rights in this category, with U.S. News calling its projected range “so-so for an EV.” Depending on the electric motors and battery size selected with the Taycan model, you can expect 199 to 227 miles of range.

In comparison, the 2022 Tesla Model S is a hands-down winner. Even its entry-level model earns roughly double with 396 to 405 miles on a charge. The Model S Long Range has manufacturer ratings of 412 miles of range, and the Model S Plaid earns 390 miles. Any version of the Model S appears to go further than the Porsche Taycan, even on its best day.

3. The Tesla Model S has more cargo space

Occupant space, cargo space, and comfortable seating tend to be deal-breakers for new EV buyers. The 2022 Tesla Model S wins this comparison, too, as it’s slightly larger in most areas and has more space than a sedan with its liftback end. The Model S has an overall length of 197.7 inches, compared to the Porsche Taycan’s 195.4 inches. The height for the Model S is also 56.3 inches, slightly taller than Taycan’s 54.3 inches.

The website Compare laid out the measurements for each EV, starting with the Porsche Taycan’s seating capacity of four versus the Tesla Model S with a passenger capacity of five. The 2022 Taycan offers 15.8 cubic feet of standard cargo room, with a maximum cargo capacity of 42.8 cubic feet. The 2022 Model S offers 25 cubic feet of standard cargo space, with a maximum capacity of 61.4 cubic feet.

4. Tesla has more years of experience

If you still need a fourth reason to buy the 2022 Tesla Model S over the 2022 Porsche Taycan, consider the experience in manufacturing and maintenance. The Model S first launched in 2012 and has come a long way with improvements and upgrades. So, Tesla is more well-versed in the mass production of EV technology. Porsche is a top-notch, well-respected luxury and performance automaker. However, EVs are new to the Porsche engineering teams and production lines.

While the 2022 Porsche Taycan is undoubtedly a worthy EV rival, it’s just not going to bring enough to the table to compete with the 2022 Tesla Model S. These four reasons, as part of this comparison, might help solidify your EV-buying decision.
