Sometimes we have to delay our gratification to get what we really want, like the perfect grilled steak, that epic job, or the right pickup. The new 2024 GMC Sierra EV may be one of those trucks, as it’s GMC’s salvo right into the middle of the hot EV truck segment. It looks good, it has big power, modern tech, and it won’t be available until 2024. But, there are (at least) four reasons to wait to buy a new Sierra EV truck, and one big one that could put you off.

You get the Denali trim

Let’s face it, for most of us a truck is not just something for work and play, but our daily driver, too. The Sierra 1500 EV will come in Denali trim, which means it should compete with a Cadillac Escalade on luxury inside. GMC trucks generally get luxury options that are denied to buyers of Chevy trucks, even if they’re the same basic truck, and Edition 1 really brings the luxury. Denali means luxury for GMC, and in the EV’s case, you’ll get open-pore wood, a panoramic glass roof, etched stainless steel, special seats, and more.

It will have monster power

Not that long ago, horsepower figures of 300 or 400 horsepower seemed massive. But, EVs are trumping those figures on the regular, and the 2024 Sierra EV has the goods. The GMC Hummer EV has 1,000 horsepower, a number reserved for $1 million supercars like Bugattis. Now, the Sierra EV will pack 754 horsepower and an astonishing 785 lb-ft of torque. That should be enough twist, GMC says, to get this truck to 60 mph in less than 4.5 seconds.

Naturally, the new 2024 Sierra EV will have lots of tech

The new Sierra EV truck will be built on GM’s Ultima platform. That platform, which looks like a skateboard, will underpin many different GM vehicles. But, since it is designed as and EV from the start, it will have the latest tech, like GM’s Super Cruise hands-free driving software, as well as the all the new driver’s assistance aids you can imagine.

It looks better than the Chevy Silverado EV

Sure, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. But, the Silverado EV is the same truck underneath, and in many cases inside, as the upcoming Chevrolet Silverado EV truck. But the Sierra ditches the flying buttresses behind the cab that make that truck look like a 2012 Chevy Avalanche. While it could be the paint colors that GMC is using for press, the Sierra EV seems to have cleaner lines and a grille that doesn’t scream “Electric Truck!” that give it an upscale look.

Also, the interior has a larger vertical screen that seems more modern than the Silverado’s horizontal screen. The Silverado EV will debut next year, though.

But it costs $107,000

The only reason to wait may be that incredible sticker price for a pickup. Yes, the Edition 1will cost $107,000. Sure, other non-Denali versions will be coming in 2025 and those will be cheaper. But, it’s hard to justify $107,000 for a truck like this when the new  Ford F-150 Lighting is already on the street, and you can order it in a Platinum version with many of the same features that costs about $98,000. However, the price is a bit of a moot point because GMC is already sold out of the new Sierra EV.
