Toyota is a Japanese auto giant that is well-known for making great cars that are reliable and safe. Unsurprisingly, some of the safest cars on the market right now are Toyotas, and in fact, four of them made the list for the safest cars of 2022. Here’s a look at the four Toyota models that made the safest cars list. 

1. The 2023 Toyota Camry

Car and Driver ranked the safest cars of the year, and the car critic primarily used testing info from other organizations, such as the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, or the NHTSA, and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, or the IIHS. Based on that data, the Camry was one of the safest cars of the year since it won a Top Safety Pick+ award from the IIHS. That’s the highest honor that the organization gives. 

The NHTSA also gave the Camry a perfect 5 out of 5 for its crash safety. This $27,000 midsize Toyota sedan also comes with a lot of standard smart safety features, and that helps build the case for why it’s such a safe car. Those standard smart safety features include forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, and more. 

That said, the safest version of the car is its Hybrid XLE configuration. It costs $33,000, and on top of being a hybrid, it can be equipped with adaptive headlights that earn the highest possible rating from the IIHS. The regular headlights still have an “acceptable” rating, but those optional ones are safer overall.

2. The 2023 Toyota Corolla sedan

This compact Toyota sedan starts at just about $22,700, and once again, it performed well in its crash tests. The NHTSA gave it a perfect 5 out of 5, and the IIHS gave it the Top Safety Pick award.

That’s a prestigious award that’s a step below the Top Safety Pick+ award that the Camry got. Overall, the Corolla sedan performed well in its crash tests, but it didn’t perform well enough in one area. 

The Corolla only received an “acceptable” grade for the IIHS’ new side crash test. If it received a “good” rating, then it would’ve qualified for the Top Safety Pick+ award. Other than that though, the Corolla is a very safe car, and it comes with the same standard smart safety features that the Camry comes with. 

3. The 2023 Toyota Corolla hatchback

The hatchback version of the Corolla also did well, and it starts at about $23,000. Since it’s almost identical to the sedan version of the car, its crash test results were fairly similar. As such, the Corolla hatchback also won a Top Safety Pick award.

There is a small difference between the two, though. The hatchback version of the car received a great grade for how easy it is to use child seats. The sedan version did not receive similar praise.

4. The 2023 Toyota GR86

This $30,000 sports car also got a spot on Car and Driver’s list. The NHTSA does not have any crash test data about the Japanese sports car just yet, but the IIHS gave it a Top Safety Pick+ award.

It scored well in every crash test, and it had few issues overall. Plus, like most other Toyota models, the GR86 comes with some smart safety features, though they’re only standard with the versions that are equipped with an automatic transmission.

Since the GR86 is more expensive than most other Toyota sedans though, it comes with more smart safety features than them. For example, the Japanese sports car also gets a rear parking sonar and reverse automatic braking.
