4 Ways the New 2024 Ford Mustang Doesn’t Improve on the Old Model
The upcoming 2024 Ford Mustang modernizes the outgoing sixth-generation model inside and out. However, the new S650 lineup fails to improve the S550 Ford Mustang from 2023 and prior in a few ways, from a lack of a Shelby badge to a problematic carryover transmission. So, are the new 2024 Ford Mustangs, like the V8-powered GT, a let down compared to the outgoing models?
What issues does the 2024 Ford Mustang have?
- Getrag MT-82 manual transmission
- No manual transmission in the EcoBoost model
- Price increase across the lineup
- No Shelby badge
The 2024 Ford Mustang brings the Blue Oval’s beloved pony car back for a seventh generation. As a result, the Mustang will outlast its closest competitors from the modern horsepower wars; the Dodge Challenger and Chevrolet Camaro are heading out to pasture. However, even with a new lease on automotive life, the 2024 Ford Mustang can potentially disappoint fans with a few problematic qualities.
Will the 2024 Mustang have a Tremec transmission?
Like the 2023 model, the 2024 Ford Mustang GT goes without a Tremec transmission. Instead, the model will carry over the Getrag-sourced MT-82 six-speed transmission. However, even with three pedals, the MT-82 has a reputation for premature wear and failure that could keep fans from getting the most out of their new pony car.
Of course, the 10-speed automatic transmission carries over from the post-facelift S550 Mustangs. Further, the Mustang’s quick-shifting transmission will be available for every trim. Still, fans who want a stouter Tremec transmission can find one at the top S650 Mustang trim, the all-new Dark Horse.
What transmission is in the 2024 Mustang EcoBoost?
Unfortunately, the 2024 Ford Mustang EcoBoost and EcoBoost Premium offer the model’s 10-speed automatic to compliment its 315-horsepower 2.3L turbocharged four-cylinder engine. However, the EcoBoost loses its manual accompaniment for the 2024 model year.
Instead, the 10-speed automatic will be the only transmission option for the lower-trim Mustangs. As a result, the only way to get a row-your-own Mustang is to pony up to the GT Coupe’s $43,090 starting price, per Car and Driver.
How much is the 2024 Ford Mustang?
Convertible trim | Starting price |
EcoBoost Fastback | $30,920 |
EcoBoost Convertible | $39,020 |
EcoBoost Premium Fastback | $36,445 |
EcoBoost Premium Convertible | $41,945 |
GT Fastback | $42,495 |
GT Premium | $47,015 |
GT Premium Convertible | $52,515 |
Dark Horse | $59,270 |
Dark Horse Premium | $63,265 |
The entire Ford Mustang lineup gets a price increase for the 2024 model year. For instance, the EcoBoost Coupe starts at around $3,370, and the Premium at $3,870 more than the 2023 models. Furthermore, the GT and GT Premium models get similar price hikes, and the lack of a standard GT Convertible means the $52,515 GT Premium Convertible is the cheapest way for fans to get a drop-top V8 Mustang in 2024.
Will there be a 2024 Shelby Mustang?
Unfortunately for die-hard Shelby fans, there won’t be a Shelby Mustang for the 2024 lineup. Instead, the top-trim Mustang will be the new Dark Horse, a 500-horsepower track-ready replacement for the Mach 1.
