Only 49 Models of the 2024 Subaru Forester Have This Problem
The current Subaru Forester, which represents the fifth generation of this compact crossover, has been in production for several years. Although it received a mid-cycle refresh in 2022, most of this SUV dates back to its 2019 model. You might assume Subaru has worked out all of the current Forester’s problems after building it for five years. However, the automaker recently issued a new Subaru Forester recall notice. Fortunately, the company quickly noticed the problem because only 49 vehicles were affected.
What problem does the 2024 Subaru Forester recall address?
Subaru recently announced a small number of 2024 Forester SUVs will need to be repaired due to a water pipe attachment bolt that wasn’t sufficiently tightened during assembly. The improperly torqued fastener could allow engine coolant to leak onto a hot exhaust, potentially causing a fire.
The automaker points to inadequate work instructions at its plant in Gunma, Japan, as the reason for the improperly torqued bolts. Fortunately, this Subaru Forester recall affects only 49 vehicles built on Sept. 13 and 14, 2023. Better yet, these vehicles have yet to be distributed to Subaru dealerships, let alone sold to customers.
Subaru says the water pipe attachment bolts will be adequately tightened at the U.S. port facility before the SUVs are disbursed to dealerships. Thus, no owner notification letters will be sent.

The 2024 model is the last of its generation
An all-new sixth-generation Forester is on deck for the 2025 model year. Subaru plans to officially unveil the redesigned compact SUV at the LA Auto Show this weekend. However, leaked images already have enthusiasts divided on its attractiveness. Reddit users have blasted the 2025 Forester for resembling a Ford Explorer and a Honda Pilot. Others have called it ugly, cheap-looking, and lacking in personality. Critics have also slammed its new infotainment tablet.
While we await the official reveal of the 2025 Forester, which is also expected to have an optional hybrid powertrain, the 2024 model carries over largely unchanged from the previous year. Every 2024 Forester packs a 2.5-liter version of Subaru’s famous “boxer” flat-four engine. In this case, it makes a lackluster 182 hp and 176 lb-ft of torque, paired with a continuously variable transmission.
In keeping with Subaru’s safety mantra, every Forester has the brand’s EyeSight driver-assistance suite. The list of camera-based standard features includes adaptive cruise control, emergency braking, and lane-keep assist. In the infotainment department, a 6.5-inch screen comes standard, with an 8.0-inch display optional or included in higher trim levels. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility are also standard, though not wireless.
Despite the 2024 Subaru Forester recall, this SUV is still worth a look
If there’s one thing the 2024 Forester has going for it, it’s affordability. The base model starts at only $28,390, including the destination charge. For $3,000 more, the $31,390 Premium trim includes a panoramic sunroof, remote engine start, Wi-Fi hotspot, and alloy wheels. Even a fully loaded 2024 Subaru Forester comes in under $40,000.
In addition, the 2024 Forester’s interior is as spacious and comfortable as ever, with a back seat that comfortably accommodates adults, even on long road trips. Plus, the generous cargo area measures 28.9 cubic feet behind the rear row and 74.2 cubic feet with the back seats folded. That’s enough to hold about 10 carry-on suitcases in the back with every seat occupied.
