There’s a new Jeep Grand Cherokee on lots this year, but did you know that Jeep is still selling the fantastic last generation of the Grand Cherokee right alongside the new one? Yup, it’s called the Grand Cherokee WK and it’s the same SUV that Jeep has been selling since the 2010 model year. While a 12-year model cycle sounds like a long one, Jeep isn’t alone.

Toyota hasn’t significantly updated the 4Runner since the latest generation was released in 2010, either. These are the two oldest SUVs for sale on the market that you can still buy brand new.

It’s hard to know for sure why the 4Runner and the Grand Cherokee have stuck around in their current forms for so long. But they both are supremely capable off-road SUVs that share platforms with other vehicles. Sharing a platform with another vehicle (like the Dodge Druango, in the Grand Cherokee’s case) can save costs, but it can also increase them when a company would have to update several models at the same time.

The Current 4Runner is an off-road beast

The current 4Runner came out as a 2010 model in the U.S. with five seats, a 2.7-liter four cylinder or a 4.0-liter V6 and two- or four-wheel drive. Since then, Toyota has upgraded the SUV to include more luxury features like leather and an eight-inch touch screen, TRD models with sophisticated 4×4 systems, and more. For 2023 about the only news is that it can be ordered in a throwback color scheme that harks back to Land Cruisers of old. The $38,805 2023 4Runner now only comes as a V6 with a 5-speed automatic and comes in eight flavors from basic SR5 to luxury Limited.

Will there be a new 2024 Toyota 4Runner?

Most signs point to a new 4Runner coming in 2024 when Toyota updates the related Tacoma truck. The new 4Runner will likely have a PHEV variant, and a likely a hybrid powertrain. It will have to keep its monstrous off-road capability, its 4×4 system, and its classic SUV good looks.

The Grand Cherokee WK is a classic

The fourth generation of Grand Cherokee was launched in 2010 as a 2011 model and Jeep will remind you at every turn through its website that it’s the “most awarded SUV ever,” which isn’t hard when your SUV lasts 12 years on the market. And, while it’s getting a bit older, keep in mind that it’s still a one-year newer platform than the latest 4Runner. But the WK2, as Jeep fans say, combines classic Jeep good looks with a stout steel unibody designed by Mercedes-Benz. It simply looks like what a Grand Cherokee should look like.

In the WK you still get an incredibly capable four-wheel drive, five-passenger, SUV. You can order the WK with the Quadra-Trac II system, which is an automatic four-wheel drive that sends traction to the wheels with the most traction. It also has hill descent control and hill start assist. Also, don’t forget, that it comes with a reliable, according to J.D. Power, 3.6-liter Pentastar V6. It starts at $37,375 and comes in base Laredo E, Laredo X and Limited trims.

The new Grand Cherokee is better in pretty much every way

Jeep improved the Grand Cherokee – the regular Cherokee is a separate model – in one way that really matters, the interior. The company packed in a lot more driver safety tech, such as full-speed collision warning and adaptive cruise control, as well as new 10.1-inch screens for the gauge cluster and the infotainment. Jeep designed the new Grand Cherokee platform just for the Grand Cherokee and its special four-wheel drive systems (Quadra-Trac I and II, and Quadra-Drive II) and Quadra-Lift air suspension. It can come in two- or three-row versions, the longer of which seats seven.

Though the standard powertrain is a powerful V6, and a V8 is optional, new for 2022, too, is the PHEV 4xe version, which has a 25-mile electric range.
