Ford’s new 2023 Ford Super Duty trucks have a lot to offer buyers that want big towing capacity and hauling grunt. Every trim except the base-model XL even has four-wheel drive as standard equipment. And though Ford hasn’t released any specifications, something like an F-450 should have a towing capacity of close to 40,000 lbs. 

What 2023 Super Duty engines are available?

The four engine options include the base 6.8-liter gasoline V8 hooked to a 10-speed automatic transmission, all of the way to a new high-output version of its 6.7-liter PowerStroke diesel engine. But if you want a more luxurious and option-laden truck with that gas engine, you’re out of luck. 

Ford knows that its four-wheel drive option is the most popular for the F-Series Super Duty trucks. That’s why it is now standard on so many trims. These include the Limited, Platinum, King Ranch, Lariat, and XLT. And if a buyer is looking for the top numbers for towing and payload capacity, gas engines usually are at the top of those lists. 

What’s the advantage of a gas-engine for payload and towing?

Many don’t want the option, but there are plenty of reasons why this is a good option not to take a pass on. It costs less right out of the gate, maintenance costs are typically lower than for diesel engines, and fuel economy numbers are also better, if only slightly. Another plus is that it is a lot easier to modify a gas-powered V8 to squeeze out even more power. 

But who needs lots of reasons some buyers prefer a gas V8. It seems odd that it can’t be ordered with any of Ford’s trims. Plus, there are higher margins for automakers with higher-end options. So why wouldn’t Ford want to offer as many options across so many trims as it could? 

And especially, with all of the new and improved options and features. Besides the two diesel engines and 6.8-liter gas engine, there is also a bigger 7.3-liter gas-burning V8, too. And the high-output 6.7-liter diesel engine features a unique turbocharger, better-flowing exhaust, and revised tuning for increased power and torque. 

What’s new for safety and tech features in the 2023 Super Duty?

On the tech end, 5G wireless connections are available. This increases infotainment performance and over-the-air updates. It also will support 10 devices at once. A head-up display will be available for the first time. All of this needs extra power generated, which is why it is introducing its ProPower Onboard 2.0 kW generator. 

Safety features include adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go and lane-centering assist. Also new is both front and rear emergency braking. A slick addition is the onboard scales that determine cargo weight to help drivers not exceed maximum payloads. Another addition is 360-degree cameras to help with trailer towing.

Now there is a backup camera at the top of the tailgate as well as in its traditional location positioned around the license plate. With the tailgate positioned down, you can now still have a view of the rear. Incorporated with the improved rear views are parking sensors to also aid in backups. And lastly, the Super Duty navigation system provides the best routing based on your payload so you avoid routes with gross payload ratings lower than what you’re carrying.
