Do you currently own a third-generation Subaru WRX and are looking to make some modifications to it? Fortunately, there is plenty of aftermarket support for the 2015 to 2021 WRX, so modifying it is as easy as clicking a few buttons on the Internet and waiting for those parts to overnight from Japan (or California). However, if you don’t know where to start, here are the five best modifications for the third-generation WRX.

1. A good set of coilovers will get you started

Although the third-generation Subaru WRX handles well, it can handle even better with a set of aftermarket coilovers. Coilovers are an all-in-one shock/spring system that allows you to control the ride height and damping on the car to tune in better handling characteristics. According to Fitment Industries, some of the most popular coilover brands include:

  • BC Racing coilovers
  • Fortune Auto 500 Series coilovers
  • Tein Flex Z

2. Aftermarket wheels

The 2015-2021 Subaru WRX comes standard with 17×8-inch wheels that look OK. But if you want to spruce up the look of your car, we recommend going with a set of aftermarket wheels. You can stick to the standard wheel size or go a little bigger for a better look and more contact with the ground.

Some popular aftermarket wheels include:

  • Anovia Titan
  • Enkei RPF1
  • Anovia Kano
  • Konig Hypergram

3. A cat-back exhaust

Since the Subaru WRX is turbocharged, it’s a great idea to free up the exhaust gasses flowing out of the engine. As such, upgrading the car’s exhaust system is a good way to gain some ponies and make the car much more fun. Some of the most popular exhaust systems are available from Cobb, Invidia, Remark, Tomei, and Borla.

4. Tuning

After throwing on an exhaust system and maybe even an aftermarket intake, getting everything tuned is a good idea. After all, the Subaru WRX’s engine is finicky, and keeping a turbocharged engine running well is important. One of the most popular tuning devices is the Cobb Accessport, which enables custom ecu mapping and fuel tuning to take advantage of the power gains from the other supporting modifications.

5. A cold-air intake

Any engine needs four main essential components to run: air, fuel, spark, and compression. As such, if you want to add power to the WRX’s FA20F engine, a cold-air intake can help. These aftermarket intake systems draw cold air from outside of the engine and add more power since cold air is denser. MAPerformance is a great source for a cold air intake system.

Routine maintenance can go a long way

Doing routine maintenance, like changing the fluids and belts on the engine, isn’t exactly a modification, but it can go a long way. If you’re planning on purchasing a 2015-2021 Subaru WRX, it’s a good idea to tackle any maintenance that it needs before adding any of the aforementioned modifications.
