1. The Genesis G80 is the best luxury car for family travels

Based on both interior space and safety ratings, the Genesis G80 takes our top spot for best family luxury car. Rear legroom measures an impressive 38.7 inches, while shoulder space is over 57 inches. In particular, shoulder room is the best in this list, and that’s a good thing for keeping those siblings from fighting over space while on a road trip.

In IIHS testing, the G80 earns Top Safety Pick Plus honors, and good ratings for child seat LATCH anchors. In addition, the Genesis’ advanced safety features all earn high marks.

2. The Volvo S90 is spacious and safe

Continuously at the top of safety rankings, it should be no surprise that a Volvo landed on the list of best luxury cars for families. Like the G80, the Volvo S90 earns IIHS Top Safety Pick Plus awards. However, the Volvo does have rear seat LATCH anchors that are difficult to work with, putting it just behind the Korean luxury car.

3. Audi A6 – a surprising contender for best family luxury car

Audi makes great sport sedans, so the Audi A6 may be a bit of a surprise addition to this list. However, high safety ratings and a wealth of advanced driver assistance tech make the A6 a good choice for vehicle safety.

Furthermore, the Audi sedan offers good rear seat leg and shoulder room, and the 13.7 cubic feet of cargo space is near the top of this list.

4. Acura TLX is spacious and one of the safest new luxury cars

The Acura TLX may not be the most popular luxury sedan, but it is a great choice for anyone that needs a safe option for family travels. It is the only car on this list that passes the updated IIHS side-impact safety tests, making it the safest new luxury car we’ve looked at.

However, the TLX is a bit short on rear-seat space, offering just under 35 inches of legroom and 55 inches of shoulder room. That said, trunk space is decent at 13.5 cubic feet, so there’s plenty of room for everyone’s luggage.

5. The Lexus ES is spacious, but ranks behind the others in safety

While the Lexus ES offers an impressive 13.9 cubic feet of cargo space and nearly 40 inches of rear seat legroom, it falls short in updated IIHS testing. Earning just an IIHS Top Safety Pick, the ES ranks the lowest on this list for safety.

A majority of problems stem from the updated IIHS side-impact tests. Here, the ES earns lower marks for rear seat occupant safety than its competition.
