Drivers who live in areas with icy and snowy winters may have increased hesitation in switching from a gas-powered car to an EV. Questions about whether electric vehicles can drive in winter weather are valid. Still, thankfully, manufacturers have considered this, and there are EVs that handle driving in the snow just as well as gas-powered vehicles. Here are five of the best EVs for driving in winter conditions.

1. Porsche Taycan

The Porsche Taycan is a beautiful car that perfectly integrates the brand’s iconic style with the practical benefits of an EV. As it turns out, it’s also an EV that can handle well in the snow. In the Turbo trim level, the Taycan features a 670-hp, dual-motor all-wheel drive setup. In addition to making it a fun car to drive in standard conditions, it makes the Porsche Taycan surprisingly capable of driving in snow.

It may also be able to beat another perceived issue EVs face in winter. Generally, EVs have reduced range in colder weather, but according to a test from CNET, the Taycan was able to drive beyond its estimated range in winter. 

2. Ford Mustang Mach-E

Because it is a crossover SUV, the Ford Mustang Mach-E can do something you might not expect from Mustang muscle cars: drive in the snow. Even Mustang Mach-E models with standard all-season tires can handle well in snow. In the sporty “Unbridled Mode,” drivers will have considerable control over the EV.

Much like the Porsche Taycan, the Ford Mustang Mach-E may maintain its estimated range even in winter weather. InsideEVs reported that the Mustang Mach-E could have driven further than its rated range during a test trip.  

3. Jaguar I-Pace

Jaguar first announced the I-Pace as the company’s first-ever electric vehicle, an impressive first showing in the EV market. The Jaguar I-Pace is an electric crossover that produces 394 horsepower with its dual-motor system. With all-wheel drive, the Jaguar I-Pace confidently handles winter roads, but one feature makes the I-Pace stand out among other EVs in the winter. 

An adjustable suspension system helps make the I-Pace a top-quality winter EV, as this bumps the Jaguar’s ground clearance to 7.8 inches. This feature, combined with the base power and handling of the I-Pace, makes this a contender for the best EV to drive in the winter. 

BMW iX

The BMW iX is an electric mid-size crossover larger than some of the other EVs on this list, and BMW had worked to show off the iX’s muscle. HotCars states that BMW conducted tests with the iX in extreme terrains like in the Alps. These tests highlighted how the all-wheel drive BMW iX has the traction to handle even the harshest winter conditions. Most drivers won’t be taking their iX models to the Alps, but if they encounter snow, this electric BMW will handle well.

Audi e-Tron Quattro

Audi states that the company’s all-wheel drive Quattro system has been a staple of its vehicles for more than four decades. It gained fame for its use in rally racing, and the spirit of the Quattro system is on display in the electric Audi e-Tron Quattro. This electric Audi is designed to drive in different conditions, but the all-wheel drive and weight of the vehicle result in it handling particularly well in snow. 

Like some other EVs, the Audi e-Tron Quattro features different driving modes. HotCars states that with Sport Select mode, the e-Tron Quattro handles quite well in snow. More adventurous drivers could even drift in the snow with the e-Tron Quattro.
