While some American car companies either have abandoned or will soon abandon the age-old familiar layout, some companies from the far East are holding strong and producing some of the most fuel-efficient cars ever made. 2022 Hyundai Ioniq Plug-in Hybrid: the most fuel-efficient sedan

Earning the top spot on this list is the Hyundai Ioniq plug-in hybrid. It’s one of the most affordable and fuel-efficient cars on the market, earning a maximum of 59 mpg, even if it is thoroughly uninspired to drive. It uses a 1.6-liter inline-four that produces a combined 140 horsepower mated to a 6-speed dual-clutch transmission. The Ioniq provides sluggish acceleration and limited cargo space, starting at $24,625. If all you’re after is good gas mileage and don’t care what else is going on, the 2022 Hyundai Ionic PHEV is the car for you.

2022 Hyundai Elantra is a well-rounded gas-saving sedan

Hyundai makes two cars on the list, the second being the 2022 Elantra. Without being a hybrid, the Elantra uses a 1.6-liter inline-four earning 43 mpg on the highway and starts at $19,850. Elantras are light at 2,868 pounds, reliable, and easy to maintain. Cabin space is limited, but the car feels like it has a lot more than 147 horsepower. Hyundai also offers the Elantra N, with 200 horsepower from a turbocharged 2-liter inline-four. Elantras feel agile through corners, and the interior feels solid considering its low price point. It’s a diverse sedan that saves money on gas.

2022 Toyota Corolla Hybrid saves gas at the expense of comfort

Bringing back the hybrid hype train is the Toyota Corolla Hybrid. It almost matches the Ioniq, getting up to 53 mpg according to Kelly Blue Book and making 120 horsepower from its 1.8-liter four-cylinder. It’s the same price as the Elantra, but the interior feels cheap and small in comparison. Acceleration in the Corolla lacks enthusiasm and has very few options available for those who want a more pampered experience. It’s great on saving gas, but offers little else.

2022 Toyota Camry Hybrid is a bigger, more comfortable Corolla

The 2022 Toyota Camry hybrid is a heavy mid-size sedan that also manages to be comfortable and provides 200 horsepower. It gets the same mileage as the Corolla but with a 2.5-liter four-cylinder mated to a continuously variable transmission. It’s not one of the fastest cars equipped with a CVT, but it provides a spacious interior and decent acceleration. Prices for the 2022 Toyota Camry hybrid start at $27,380. It’s a far better option for saving gas than the Corolla for just a couple thousand dollars more.

2022 Honda Insight

The Honda Insight is akin to the Civic, but in hybrid form. It’s a compact sedan that somehow offers a spacious and comfortable interior, clear visibility, and smooth acceleration. It also manages to save gas at about 50 mpg while providing 150 horsepower from a 1.5-liter hybrid powerplant. It’s decently quick as well, thanks to its relatively light 3,000-pound curb weight, but is more expensive than the other cars on this list at $28,985. 

If you can afford the Honda Insight, that might offer the best-balanced package. However, if you’re feeling thrifty and looking for more excitement at the expense of a little comfort, opt for the Hyundai Elantra. It’s light, quick, nimble, and efficient. Interior and trunk space are ample, including the rear-seat legroom. It’s a basic car that maxes out its price point.
